Situated on some 8,000 acres, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi-pronounced su-wan-na-poom-International Airport opened in September, 2006. The start of operations for this new airport was somewhat less than auspicious, as problems with runway construction prompted calls for the re-opening of Bangkok's former international airport, Don Muang. Suvarnabhumi has remained open, although some airlines have temporarily moved their domestic flights back to Don Muang.
Located about 30 kilometers from downtown Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi can be reached from downtown Bangkok by taking the east-bound Bangna-Trat Highway. In all, there are five different access routes to the airport. Maps for each of these can be found at the following URL: Airport Map
With two 4,000-meter runways and 120 gates, Suvarnabhumi International is designed to handle up to 76 flight operations per hour. Airport planners expect the facility to accommodate 45 million passengers and 3 million tons of cargo annually.
Suvarnabhumi's main terminal has seven concourses named A through G. The complex covers approximately 563,000 square meters, making it one of the largest structures in the world. Over 45 different airlines serve Suvarnabhumi, with exotic names like Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Air, El Al, KLM, Air Macau, Air France, and Finnair, as well as US carriers including Delta Airlines, United Airlines, and Northwest Airlines.
Travelers should check at the airport for smoking information and Internet connection availability.
