No Car at Washington Regan DCAPositiv: Clean and new MinivanNegativ: I attempted to rent the vehicle from Washington Regan Airport (DCA) and the reservation went to Washington DC. A DOWNTOWN LOCATION. I had to take the Metro with my family and get lost trying to find a nearly hidden location under a building. I am a very frequent traveler and rent many cars. This switch was part of the reservation system which shows cheaper cars from other locations than the one you specified. There was over a $300 change from the airport location and the downtown location hours were 7am-7pm which doest allow you to drop off your car earlier for early flights. I will be very hesitant to use the Kayak site again.

I booked the car through KAYAK but payment at AVIS at different chargeNegativ: We make the booking car rental at KAYAK at the cost 348.92 $ for Avis Rent a Car Confirmation Number:02673329US1 ,But when pick up AVIS made up the contract charge 572$ at 11:15am (28th Dec) . We claim the payment at return time of drop off at (12:00 noon 30th Dec) , They said that because we pick up 45min early then they charge additional 1 more day , it's not fair if they mentioned clearly and adivise us we would delay pick up 45 min to meet the contract term . The total amount 572$ was not clearly in detail . In additional on 2nd Feb ,2018 our bank card has been charge other 130$ by Avis for unknown reason . All the gap paid amount with booking amount should be returned to us as requested .

Positiv: Quick in getting me my carNegativ: I expected to pay half the amount I ended up paying. My estimated total was around $33, and I understand it was an estimation, that's fine. But I ended up paying $80!! AFTER they gave me the receipt and AFTER I asked for them to explain all the charges did they offer me an explanation of "it's because you didn't fill up the gas tank even though it says full". After inquiring some more about what they meant by that, I do understand why they're asking me to fill up the tank and bring in a receipt even if the gas gauge reads "full," but it would have been really nice (and quite simple on their part) to have informed me of that BEFORE I took the car. Yes, they did ask me before I took the car, if I wanted to pay the $30 extra for them to fill up the gas tank. Since I was only driving a few miles for a few hours, I didn't expect to use enough gas to empty the tank, so I kindly declined.
When I was talking with them, there was also a line forming, so they were annoyed that I was asking these questions (and it was quite apparent on how annoyed they were).
Not using Kayak or Avis again. Extremely disappointed.

Positiv: The car was fine and I was able to get a cheaper rate than many other places in town. Negativ: There was an added 6 dollar fee that was never explained. We were in a hurry to leave although I did ask the lady about it and she said it was "too late" to change it. She claimed at first that we had said yes to some extra damage coverage online which we had not and this was reflected on the bill. So I never did figure out what the 6 dollar charge was and when we went to turn the car in they said we could call the customer service office about it, but in reality I am not going to sit on the phone for 30 minutes for 6 dollars and the charge should not have happened in the first place. Secondly, we had to stand in the cold for about 15 minutes as we waited for our car to be prepared. That was annoying although the attendant did apologize for it. We were just in a hurry to get on the road because it was the day before Thanksgiving and we were in a hurry to beat traffic. It's just these small things that make you not want to rent with this company again.

Very long wait to pickup car, no explanation, lots of chaos and confusion. Staff were fighting with each other and ignoring customers. Total lack of accountability or basic customer service.
Negativ: Only the pickup location had an unfriendly staff, not concerned about what was reserved as far as trunk space and not accommodating !
Fortunately my visitors brought small suitcase and we had to place one of them into the back seat. Please ensure trunk space advertised matches the car, if not, free upgrades should be provided instead of doubling prices!!! That was very rude.

Negativ: The staff at the pick up and drop off were incompetent and unhelpful. Our trip was severely delayed because of their incompetence. They could not retrieve a vehicle that functioned properly. Afterwards. we left an item in the vehicle on accident and the attendants were extremely rude and unhelpful.
Negativ: The car needs to be looked at again as it was jerky a bit on the highway. But on to the most pressing issue...
The car we rented had plates that expired 2 days before we were to return it, so there was no option to extend the rental even through it was necessary to ensure our safe return with Hertz's property. It would be helpful to NOT allow a car with almost expired plates to be rented, especially because there were several moments during the return trip where we were in standstill traffic because of accidents ahead of us, ultimately affecting and extending our return time to outside of the return window.
Trying to be proactive, we attempted to contact customer service to anticipate any concerns with our return. We were told by a Hertz employee in Silver Spring named Chris that our reservation was modified to allow us to return to ANY location in the area, including HIS suggestion that we go to Union Station in Washington, DC. Once we got to Union Station, we learned there was a $200 return fee that was not mentioned to us by Chris over the phone. This fee caught us off guard. To avoid the fee, we had to drive an additional hour to BWI airport to return the car, adding more mileage and more time driving while tired.
In light of this experience, I will forego future rentals with Hertz and take my business to other rental companies and make sure that I'm honest to loved ones about this experience.
Money hungry, terrible customer service, extra chargesNegativ: Budget office in NYC said it was fine to have my dog, no additional cost. I drop the car off in DC and am told that the small amount of dog hair will require a full DETAIL and I would be charged an extra $50. He said vacuuming is included on ALL rentals at no additional cost, so I asked to please vacuum the car first prior to charging me the extra fee. He told me no, it would require a detail (which is ABSURD), charged the fee, and blew me off. I asked to speak to the manager - he said he was the manager. Called the Budget customer service line - same story. Completely money hungry company with terrible customer service. You shouldn't charge a customer something until you have PROVEN to them that it is necessary. Ridiculous.
WA DC office StaffPositiv: They were open until 4:00 on Saturday.Negativ: The WA DC office staff was not friendly or helpful. "No, we don't have maps since we rent GPS." I asked about tolls and was then told about the tolls and additional charges. I needed to probe to learn how to disable the machine. The attendant was not forthcoming. The man in parking lot she told us to ask for help was even less helpful and gave us wrong directions. The seats were dirty, stained and melted by what appeared to be cigarettes.
Negativ: Upon arrival, we were told that we could not use the minivan we had booked because we were under 25 years old. Instead, they gave us a smaller sedan, but also still charged us the under 25 fee. KAYAK did not clarify that we needed to be older that 25 to rent a van. Because we were hoping to use the van to use, we ended up having to leave some of our posessions behind because they would not fit in the sedan. We are extremely displeased by the lack of clarity on both Budget and KAYAK's website.

Location, Location, LocationPositiv: The car was good and the reps were so nice. The process was fast and painless.Negativ: Could the pickup location be in a worse place? It took forever to find it deep inside the parking garage at Union Station and that was bad enough. But trying to get to the parking garage entrance for drop-off through downtown D.C. with its traffic, construction, and one-way, stop and start streets? It was a nightmare. The rep gave us verbal directions when we picked up the car, but a map with printed directions would have helped.

Great servicePositiv: When I went to pick up the car I reserved, it was below freezing outside and there was snow and ice on the ground, so I asked for a 4-wheel drive and they gave me a new Jeep Grand Cherokee. The car was great and more than what I paid for. Everyone was very nice and courteous.

Debit/credit card dilemma Positiv: Nice car great price!Negativ: Folks at the counter had a hard time taking my checkcard which can be used as a debit OR credit card. They insisted it was only a debit card. First time left without a car. Read the policy and called customer service to customer and confirmed check cards are acceptable. Returned to the rental office and used the video kiosk. Card was rejected bc it was my third purchase in a place outside my home area. Resolved that issue with the bank and was told I needed to finish at the counter. After 15 minutes of arguing their policy I was finally allowed to swipe my card and get the car.

I had booked at economy car and was given a compact/hatchback which did not even have enough trunk space for my luggage. There were no options at the pickup location and the car was noisy, old, slow.

No Cars Available Even After Making A ReservationNegativ: Although I had a reserved a car in advance, none were available on the morning in question, and I had to wait for an hour before obtaining the car (as did other customers). Also, the pickup and drop off facilities at Union Station in DC are substandard and difficult to find and access.
Negativ: Needed to clean windshield myself. Wasn't the car I look iced out.

What is the window on reservation timesNegativ: My flight search had a possible 12PM arrival at IAD. The flight I actually got had me arriving at 9:30PM. My reservation was not held and they had no mid-sized cars left. I was forced to upgrade for more money then I had wanted to spend on the rental.
Negativ: All the cars had over 30,000 miles on them and were a bit worn out.

Checkout was slow since they had to scramble to get the replacement fully prepped.Negativ: Had rented pickup, but since unavailable we got a small cargo van. Not as comfortable, but did manage to get all but one item needed fit into the van.
Be careful about walking the car and identifying pre-existing damagePositiv: Easy company to work with. Nice selection of cars at a reasonable price. Convenient pick-up and drop off.Negativ: I always walk the car to double-check for pre-existing scratches and dents. The gate attendants seemed surprised that I wanted to walk the car and get them to note any pre-existing scratches and dents. Nothing negative happened when I dropped it off (because I had the signed note from the gate attendant), but I was glad that I did not blindly take the vehicle at the start of the rental period. Made me wonder what might have happened if I did not have the damage documented.
Need quicker departure systemPositiv: The car was reasonably clean and well equipped. Negativ: Single threads the exit so personal cars wait in queue for each checkout of rental cars. This is poor management of the process as even customers going back to airport are required to be held captive to the slothful efforts of the staff.

My husband and I have the same credit card - same exact number, we just each have our name on o e. We inadvertently swapped cards and they wouldn't let me use it. I went to use debit and they first needed to check my credit score?!, see my return flight info and see more ID. It was such a hassle.
Negativ: Wouldn't except our debit card. Ran my credit and was denied rental. How embarrassing. Had to use my Mother's card and was added on as a driver for 13$ a day extra. What a ripoff. Had us over over a barrel.
If you get a chance...upgrade to the PassatPositiv: I loved the car...almost everything about it. Sport mode, paddle shifters, great handling. Will definitely try to get this one again. 42 days 4000+ miles driven. Negativ: The insurance is robbery. My credit card provides full coverage however for some reason liability is absent. The price of our rental went from the quoted $972 to $1987...does anyone else find this unreasonable? Another extreme case of ripoff...it would be nice if my wife had been able to drive, but I'm not paying $18.99/day for 42 days to make it happen. This is absurd.
