Shuttle bus pick-up from Kagaonsen Station Spacious room with beautiful view and include all basic required facilities; and was very clean Delicious food - dinner and breakfast Staff very friendly
Public bath is a little small, especially the open-air bath.
The location is just at Kakusenkei Gorge, good for the view and a walk for the beautiful surroundings around.
Staff where lovely all through my stay. Although a big hotel it felt intimate and the traditional room was such a treat! They also provide free pick up to and from the JR station and gave me great advice on things to do!
Nice garden view with river nearby. Good English at check-in counter.
Can't think of.
This is a classic ryokan experience, rooms with tatami flooring, sitting area with balcony overlooking the river below, sliding shoji doors. The hotel is built on the cliffs, so all rooms have a view of the valley and river. We also took part in the kaiseki dinner, and I found the stay a real bargain with half-board included -- dinner was not the most elaborate I've had in Japan, but I quite liked the buffet breakfast with plentiful of options. Room was spacious and comfortable; futon used was extra thick (plus an additional padding), so sleep was perfect. The hotel is obviously aging, but still feels grand with its design and choice of materials. Typical for a ryokan, the onsen facilities are small and comprised of just a large indoor bath, sauna, and outdoor rotenburo -- but they overlook the valley, forest, and river below, and the sound of running water (plus the soundtrack of shamisen music) really adds to the atmosphere -- there was even free sake and umeshu offered in the rotenburo (but only in the evening hours). Free massage chairs are available in the relaxation area just outside the onsen. An abundance of activities are provided in the hotel, including karaoke room (free during the day, but reservation required at night), ping pong, game room with video games/comic books/claw machines. If you get bored, the main stretch of town with the public bath and cute shops are just a few blocks away. The ryokan does offer free shuttle pickup and dropoff from Kagaonsen station, but you need to reserve a day in advance (since the shuttle is shared among multiple properties). I found all staff quite courteous, which is the norm for Japan.
Only small hand towels are provided in the onsen (so you have to carry the large bath towel from your room and back, which I found somewhat strange). Staff speaks limited English. We were not escorted to the room with tea freshly made for us on arrival, which is typically the format while staying in a ryokan in Japan.
