Bait and switchPositiv: The car, while it was a new car, still was not the car that we reserved. We reserved a Nissan Maxima for 4 adults and got a KIA SorentoNegativ: This was my first use of the Kayak site and we reserved a car for a week out of Cabo. The car was not what I ordered (a smaller KIA instead of a Nissan). The real problem was that as soon as I reserved it, I received an email from an insurance company, Allianz, that offered to sell me insurance. I purchased the insurance, but ACE rental would not recognize that insurance. I had to purchase another insurance policy through them at 3 times the price or not get the car.
Misrepresentation of Rental Costs; Vehicle Not as RepresentedPositiv: Not much. Starting with the (initial) airport shuttle ("Ace badged"), which delivered me to a 35 minute wait, at the (wrong) office.
Once we took (other) shuttle, I was offered a Kia "Forte"(instead of the VW Jetta-Full Size or "similar"). My reservation stated
Then, instead of the $30.69USD, that my reservation stated, I was given a choice of $180.69USD (with a $2500.00USD "Hold", and final charge on my credit card), or $215.51USD, for an $800.00 "Hold", and final charge on my credit card.Negativ: I did not appreciate the disorganization, the need to go to (2) different office locations, the waiting in line (at each of those offices), for a total of 50 minutes, the type of car that I was rented, (i.e.smaller than the car class that I reserved), or the ("Surprise!!!") additional charges that were somehow acceptable, and explained by, the "Terms and Conditions".
While "Additional Charges may apply for required insurance, when the "required insurance" is 6 times the cost of the rental, something is wrong.
as it should bePositiv: everything was as advertised with no glitchesNegativ: It is unfortunate that all the insurances need to be so expensive
Positiv: Ramona Alvarez in cabo san lucas was a great help and everything went well.
Great bargain Positiv: Little yellow convertible Fiat for 6 days-231 bucks. Can't beat that!
Positiv: Mini van was clean, and everything worked well on it.Negativ: The price given on Kayak for renting a mini van from Ace for a week in Cabo San Lucas was about $140. All other mini van rentals listed on Kayak were $400-$450 a week. When we got to Ace to pick up the mini van, they said that the $140 price doesn't include taxes, fees, etc, and those brought the price up to $424 for the week. So they ended up being the same price as the other car rental companies. It's a tricky way to get people to choose them.
Positiv: Ease of transactions Negativ: They charge you 30$ a day for insurance unless you put 4000$ down
Too much pressure for InsuranceNegativ: I get the deal - give someone a very low price to rent a car - but then heavily pressure someone to buy what is very expensive insurance. I had my own - and even then was made to feel extremely uncomfortable.
you better buy the insurancePositiv: The office was clean and the car was cheap. Negativ: The ACE representatives take a long time to check you in and out and it is very unclear what insurance options you need. I was under the impression that my credit card provided me insurance so declined all insurance despite the ACE representatives advising to get the full insurance coverage. Just to put it into perspective the rental was $50 without insurance and $200 with full insurance - so a 4x difference. On the highway back to return the rental car I got a flat tire which I fixed myself. When I returned the care the ACE representatives charged me $330 additional for the flat tire and dirt marks on the car. I had no choice to accept because they had a $2,500 deposit and I was late to catch my flight. I would not rent from ACE again.
Very clean car Negativ: Lack of signage or direction to the service desk at the Airport
Insurance tripled the advertized priceNegativ: The insurance that was added was misrepresented and ended up tripling the cost of the initial advertised price of the car.
BAIT AND SWITCHPositiv: Found that pricing was misleading. What I thought was going to cost $25.00 per day ended up at $70.00 per day due to mandatory insurance which should have been shown at the outset.
Great experience - Tommy was amazingPositiv: Easy shuttle from airport
Fast friendly service
No hidden fees
Overall very easy
You don’t have it till you have itNegativ: In Mexico, we found that Kayak reservations for both cars do not lock in anything until hours or days later. We never got the car. They didn’t have one for us even though we had a confirmation number.
Positiv: It was fast and convenient. Negativ: Being charged extra when we picked up the car. when we thought we were only paying $169. Not very impressed with yhat
Pleasant and fairPositiv: Inexpensive, helpful and nice to deal with. I got a puncture from some road debris. I returned the car for a different one. I only had liability insurance and they only charged me $10 US for the tire repair which I thought was very reasonable.Negativ: Car had seen better days, but it got us around just fine. It's hard to complain at the price I paid.
NEVER RENT A VEHICLE IN MEXICO!!!!!Positiv: NOTHINGNegativ: OK...look, your online site sent me to Alamo for a nice deal renting a vehicle in Mexico. What you or Alamo didn't disclose was that the $12/day deal was far from the truth. Not only didn't they accept the insurance I purchased, also from one of your links, but they added $40 a day for insurance plus wanted a $700 debit deposit on a vehicle that had many dings, etc. that I am certain they would have charged me for when I brought it back. So I told them to get you know what and left that rip off joint. A - I will never use Alamo again; and B - I will never ever use your site again and will let others know about how horrific this experience was. Thanks for starting off our family vacation in a horrible way. Be honest with your online customers. I certainly will warn them!
Positiv: Staff was friendly, car was clean and ready. Drop off was easy. Overall 5 stars for all.
Insurance was double the price of RentalPositiv: Everything except insurance prices were through the roofNegativ: Insurance prices were $50/ day
Positiv: Original price of car rental was very good but they get you on the insurance which was over $300 for the week. Bit of bait and switch it seems.Negativ: When we turned the car in at the end of the rental, they picked out a scratch that they said wasn't there when we rented it. Of course, we disagreed and could not recall any bump or collision that would have caused this. In fact I had called out the same scratches at the beginning but they said it was additional to what was there. Because I had insurance, they could not charge us but it seemed like they intended to make money off the insurance company.
Likely would rent from someone else in future.
All cost must be specifiedPositiv: EverythingNegativ: Except that your page doesnt specify obbligatory insurace that you had to pay to rent the car. Mostly important when the daily insurance is 3 times the rental price
Don't appreciate the deceitNegativ: I booked a car rental for 83 dollars....I was charmed in total 231 dollars. If insurance is required then include it in your qinitial quote. I don't appreciate the deceit and getting blindsided and screwed once I'm in mexico. All you car rentals are deceitful and dishonest.
Alamo misrepresents real rental cost Positiv: Clean car. Nice. New. Negativ: The total car rental fees were misrepresented and intentionally put in the small print just to get my reservation. I had a bad experience and I won't use Alamo again because of it. You may have got my rental this time but you won't get it next time.
Smooth experience Positiv: I read all the crazy reviews of rental companies in Cabo and found Alamo seemed ok
I got online reservation for like $30 for 4 days but knew that wouldn't be the real price with insurance. The liability only price was $148 and was lower than I expected so I asked to up the insurance to full insurance. It came out to $200 and they were nice to me and didn't even care that I was 1.5 hrs late returning it! Good experience Negativ: The car was new but pretty crappy compared to American cars. Tiny wheels and weak engine
Don’t rent at budget San Jose del cabo Positiv: The management here is terrible. Negativ: They made me purchase extra supplemental insurance that wasn’t required to rent here. The vehicle they gave me was horrible. Carpet ripped out, latch to open gas tank was most of way ripped off (bare wire you had to pull)
Scam artists Negativ: Even though i had purchased insurance thru my reservation they came up with senseless reasons to add additional insurance just to make money and when I refused the additional insurance they would not give us a rental
They charged for gas even though it was fullNegativ: We had an early flight before they opened. We dropped off car and tank was full. I took a picture of it. I noticed they charged us for gas on my credit card. I have filed a dispute with card company. This is very wrong.
Rip offNegativ: Prices were not as advertised. Required insurance coverage was 3x the price of the car.
Never, ever again Positiv: The airport shuttle driver was friendly Negativ: A complete scam. The office did not honor our reservation. They claimed we needed additional insurance per a new Mexican law. They would not accept the insurance verification I had and would not provide us with the wireless access code to show additinal online proof. The Budget employees said the only way our confirmation/reservation would be honored was if we attended an info session on a hotel in town! Two men from La Vida then gave us a map and told us that Budget would waive the $300+ insurance fee if we came to their resort. I was shocked, but acknowledge every country has different business practices. We did not have this experience at National and were not charged a fake fee nor duped to attending an education seminar. Other patrons in the Budget office said this also happened to them. Unacceptable. Please do not waste your time or energy here. Staff was very, very unhelpful.
Did not rent the carNegativ: We ended up not renting from Budget. We wanted to reduce the number of days of the rental and the agent would not assist us at the counter. He told us to go online and change the reservation. You should also inform customers that mandatory insurance purchase runs about $50-60 per day.
Display true costPositiv: Car was clean and drive fine. Fit our needs for the week. Negativ: Liability insurance was not added which added significant cost to the rental. The added cost surprise was a HORRIBLE way to start a vacation.
Fraudulent misleading marketing Positiv: Gina car pieces was 150, for five days for a old beat up car but it did the jobNegativ: They have low prices but then up sell hundreds of dollars of insurance
Note some cresit cards will cover some of the liability
Also services was slow and car took over one hour to get after leaving the airport
Much more expensive than advertised.Positiv: Easy to arrange and deal with.Negativ: Price was way too high and vastly more than originally advertised. Vehicle was advertised at $15/day. Our 8 day rental cost $844 total by the time all the additions of insurance, fees, exchange rates etc. were tacked on.
A reservation means nothing! Positiv: When we landed in San Jose we were told there were no cars available, they were sold out. Our only option was renting from a different agency for over $100 dollars a day, which was 3x more than we have booked it online for. We were stranded at the airport for 4 hours, we luckliy had a friend who was able to pick us up. Never had such a bad car rental experience, having a reservation means nothing!!!
Lied about ratePositiv: The rate you agree to pay has nothing to do with what they charge you. Expect to pay 7x more. Corrupt Mexican franchise.Negativ: Price deception.
I hate bait and switch car rental placesNegativ: If you tell me a quote, I call specifically to confirm that quote, offer to pay over the phone saying I don't want to pay anything more than this quote when I get to the office, they refuse but reassure me that the price won't change when I get there and then when I get to the office they tell me no way they can accommodate the price quoted and I need to pay mandatory insurance which will cost me $400 more than my original quote, and of course I don't have phone service to find competitors and end up just eating the cost.
Cheated US on taxes for liability insurance Negativ: They gave us an outrageous price for liability insurance (told
My girlfriend who rented the same day she had a special of $70 for the week, while we were charged $25 per day over 7 days. We're told that was the least amount of liability insurance under Mexican law and the cheapest. Bologna!! Won't trustndillar again.
Prepare to pay for mandatory insurance when renting a car in Mexico.Positiv: Drop off was very simple and clear cut. Price was as expected. Negativ: Pickup was slow, but I think it is because people do not understand mexican insurance. Maybe you could do a better job of making that information available when people book cars. My car was listed at $12 for the week and ended up $189 for the week with full insurance. I knew it would not be $12, that's insane to think that will be the cost. I was actually pleased with the final cost , less than I expected. People renting for the fist time i Mexico are not prepared.
Be prepared to haggle over the cost of the insuranPositiv: The cost of the rental car was something like $5 a day, but the insurance is where they get you. Negativ: Basically traded away 3 hours of our vacation time to have breakfast and get full coverage insurance for the week. They quoted us over $500 for the insurance, if we wanted to pay it out of pocket.
Deceiving PriceNegativ: The price quoted online was deceiving. It said $2 a day, when in fact it was $2 for the car but mandatory $30 a day fees... Never a nice surprise. What I expected to cost $4 ended up costing $72...
Positiv: The car worked fine, and pick up and drop off (at the airport in Cabo) was easy.Negativ: The cost--$390 for one week--is excessive. I have never paid that much for a rental car before, either in Europe or America. I understand that Mexico has strict rules concerning insurance coverage, and that's fine. I was perfectly willing to pay extra for the required insurance. But this seemed to be well over what is reasonable.
Tried to steal from me.Negativ: We ended up not needing such a big car, so we asked for a smaller rental, going from a minivan to a standard. The representative refused to give us a price for the smaller car. He wouldn't call anyone, and he wouldn't check his books. The counter person did EVERYTHING to get us in the van, so he could take us to the off site rental agency, and then we would be trapped at his rental agency. He was a scammer, and an embarrassment to Dollar Rental Car. We went to the counter two stands over, and got an extremely fair price, and rented it on the spot. Again, Dollar cannot control their desk in Mexico. I am extremely unhappy with Dollar, and will bring this up to my corporate officer in charge of rentals.
Positiv: clean carNegativ: a car rental with Alamo at Cabo San Lucas Airport for 1/28/17.
We landed at the airport yesterday, In Los Cabos Mexico, and greeted appropriately at the airport by the Alamo people, and brought via shuttle a short distance to a center about 4 blocks away. We went in there were 2 total families in the van including us. We went into the Alamo rental area and were greeted nicely. We were talking to the rental person and he informed us of a mandatory liability insurance for damage to other cars, that is not included in the already purchased alliance insurance. He showed me in the hotwire small print that some international car rentals have mandatory insurance requirements that result in additional charges at the time of pick up. I also purchased the alliance insurance offered at the time of rental that has sufficed in the past when I have rented in Mexico.
My issue is that one of the people at the office then came in when we were discussing this charge of $220 for the insurance and asked if we were owners of The timeshare we are going to then the fee would be waived if we went to their timeshare at a different hotel. I am not sure how this works in general for an Alamo car rental agency but we felt the charge was now arbitrary and we ended up paying the additional $220 above our rental and the Alliance insurance. This is inappropriate and I do not think this is how a Alamo transaction and use of services is set up.
If this is typical I need to know so I am not subjected to this in the future and I will not use the services of Alamo.
Negativ: Charged for scrapes that I thought were ordinary wear and tear. Also, in Mexico, you have to get insurance. Not disclosed by Dollar in advance.
Dollar in San Jose Del Cabo is a very bad dealPositiv: Nothing Negativ: Having my fare doubled for liability insurance with no notice at all from Kayak in the fare breakdown, paying for a car that should have been put to pasture 10,000 miles ago. Having Dollar look for any reason possible to charge me for damages to the car upon return. Getting hit up by Dollar employees to sign up for time share presentations on Dollar property
Positiv: New car, clean, shuttle bus to rental office came quickly. Negativ: One person checking people in, and with one person ahead of me, it took me an hour to get out of there. Car wasn't ready.. needed to be filled with gas.
Negativ: Big surprises with Dollar Car Rental. I only used the service one day and canceled. Then I rented another 8 days a better car 1/2 the price of Dollar. I will never go back to Dollar car rental.
was ripped of Positiv: Agency told me the reservation was cancelled and then made me pay 3 times amount of money to rent car. I had a reservation for $215.00 and then had to pay $346 more. The website is incorrect. the agency was horrible and treated me poorly. The agent at Dollar in Cabo San Lucas working in the office should be fired.Negativ: The agency had terrible customer service and the web site lied about the cost of the car. The car was clean, the drop off/return was very efficient.
Positiv: very uncomfortable and small car - did not drive well
Positiv: Friendly staffNegativ: Their computer kept going down during checkin.....took a long time to check in, then they wouldn't go get our car until we listened to the lady trying to get us to go to a timeshare presentation. We had traveled all night and were not in the mood!!
Positiv: Easy rental process. Courteous service. Told you all the charges upfront. No surprises
Positiv: Great customer service
Terrible airport experience good once you get to Enterprise Positiv: Desk service was goodNegativ: Airport is a free for all. Pricing is very badly communicated online. Rental quotes of $20 a day very misleading when the insurance is added comes out nearer $100......bait and switch, bad buisness. Oh and lastly a Toyota corollary is not a full size car
Sub par carPositiv: Staff was friendly enoughNegativ: The fact that u need to fight the time share people at airport
price is never what's listedPositiv: pick up and drop off was pretty easyNegativ: 6 day car rental -- $5/per day (yes, that's correct) + $20/ per day for some insurance. 20+5 * 6 = $150, so why does my bill come out to $250
the car had a sticker that said "premium gas only", this a tiny economy car, what's with the performance gasoline requirement?
Positiv: Nothing Negativ: It's a Rip off. We cancell
Great vehicle and service - BUT hidden feesPositiv: Solid car. Courteous staff.Negativ: Only 1 staff member @ 7p when landed and had to wait over hour for getting car and signing contract, even with an express profile. (Waiting in line, etc.)
ALSO, there are hidden fees that Kayak did not include in its quote - namely "mandatory" insurance fees no less than $20 / day that must be included in the cost of the rental, as per Mexican law ... as it was described to me by the Enterprise staff member.
Positiv: close to the airport Negativ: We reserved a Full Size Car. The vehicle we got was a Mid-size and very small for 5 people and 5 suitcases. When we all got in the car was lowered in the back so we had to be careful on all the bumps in town. The vehicle picture that we reserved was a Ford Fusion and we received a Nissan Altima, substantially smaller. They did not offer a bigger vehicle. If you look up a Ford Fusion it states a Full Size, the Nissan Altima states Mid Size! Then when we waited for the car they sent us over to a guy that basically worked there but was trying to sell us Timeshare/Golf Membership. That was ridiculous. Next time in Cabo will rent elsewhere!
Car RentalPositiv: The car was clean and full of gas.Negativ: They did not have the car ready. Wait time was 30 mins.
Handcuffed.Positiv: car itself was fine...zero complaints.Negativ: Insurance rates were a scam...ridiculous. A tiered price program with agent stressing the most expensive one...HARD! Finally settled for the 2nd of 5 tiers based on advice of my insurance agent in US after phoning her. Agent then went through entire form printing and signing process and when I was ready for final signature I realized that they had opted for the zero insurance level. I would have had no coverage and they knew it. I caught the "error" and had the forms reprinted and I had to fill out everything all over again. We were then ushered to an individual that i thought was going to hand us the keys but instead started a high pressure sales pitch for a time share which 4X I had to refuse. Bad business...will not use Enterprise/National again.
Don’t rent with Europcar in CaboPositiv: Finally got the right car that I booked a day lateNegativ: Forced to take insurance even after I provided proof thru credit card. Given wrong SUV and charged more because it was larger. It broke down after 2 starts. Left in random part of Cabo for 2.5 hours while we waited for them to deliver another SUV. Dishonest employees. Avoid this location.
Complete Failure!Positiv: There was nothing to like!Negativ: I reserved a minivan and they didn't have anything but small cars available and their proposed solution, which obviously wasn't acceptable, was to rent me 2 small cars for the same price. Ridiculous!
Cost me $100's more to rent from National/Enterprise!
Wrong carNegativ: Saidbthey cancelled our reservation on accident, gave away last van, got stuck renting a second car to handle our 7 people.
Add 1 hour at counter & $50-70/day for Mexico insuNegativ: Expect an extra hour picking up & dropping off. The process is slow. Also add $50-70/day for mandatory insurance. Don't believe the $3/day quotes online.
Don t go there! Fraud!Positiv: When returning the car they claimed caused a damage on the front. I told them that I saw this damage at the pick-up and told their colleague. The collegue wrote in spanish (I don t speak spanish) that it s only a scratch. At the return they told me I caused it and that I habe ti pay it. I recommend to go somewhere else. I believe i was set up. And ALWAYS take pictures of the previous damages.
Bait and Switch, with a bit of extortion thrown inPositiv: NothingNegativ: Obscene insurance rates, not shown a contract until after the credit card was charged, off-site office with very few workers and long lines, ignored the rate given, was told "take it or leave it" and there was no way to get back to the airport terminal. Horrible experience.
Good cars, but the checkout was loooongPositiv: The car was clean, comfortable. The drop-off was fast.Negativ: The check in process took way too long. One contract took at least half an hour.
Also, the insurance added was very high so I ended up paying almost 1K for four days.
The car price tripled due to insurance requirementPositiv: The car was priced at a terrific rate when I did the reservation online. It was very small, but comfortable, clean and had good gas mileage. Negativ: According to the counter staff person, the Mexican government required insurance that was about $400.00 more, and I even used my own credit card insurance for collateral. Outrageous!
Reserved a minivan for $100. Got a tiny sedan for Negativ: They saw my crying baby and knew I couldn't walk out so they screwed me. Other people on my trip renting from other places paid 1/3 what I was charged.
And Europecar doesn't even pretend to reserve vehicles. I'm doubtful they ever have minivans in their fleet at this location, but they assured me they did right until I arrived and was standing at the counter.
Refused to honor the reservationNegativ: The staff at europcar refused to honor the reservation as in their own words "You got the car very cheap". They quoted a price of $200 for the 2 days instead of the $65 I had booked.
Awful Negativ: They Make everything to increase the price, the service was awful, fx rate 20% more than in the banks, and they push you to take the insurance even do your credits card has one, really a bad experience
Missleading promotionNegativ: No warning that a extremely expensive insurance purchases would be required or show proof of insurance. Required documents in promotion did not include these, nor specified the additional substantial cost.
Positiv: No car, no help, no reason to try again with so many other options.
No carsPositiv: Nothing Negativ: Made a reservation for a vehicle and when we arrived they said no more cars sorry. They didn't try to help us find a different car rental company they just told us sorry. Nobody would tell me why they didn't have anymore cars for us, they just continued to say sorry. I asked if there was a supervisor or anyone to talk to and she recommended I take a taxi to the rental office (instead of calling someone) even though their shuttle was sitting out front of the terminal. I ended up going to a different rental company and paying double for a larger vehicle. Overall I would stay away from this business at all costs. Very poor customer service and no accountability. Will not use again!
No car available when I got therePositiv: That sucked
No car availablePositiv: When we got to the airport, no matter our reservation, our car was not available. We had to take a bus and a cab. I won't trust firefly anymore
Excellent RentalPositiv: It was easy, just a lot of paperworkNegativ: Lot of paperwork
Als ich ankam, gab es kein AutoPositiv: Das war unter aller Sau
Ausgezeichnet VermietungPositiv: Es war leicht, einfach eine Menge PapierkramNegativ: Viele Unterlagen
Good rate for a mid-size carPositiv: The rental car staff was very friendly and shuttled us to and from the airport.
Lousy experience at hertz caboPositiv: NothingNegativ: We had a reservation but the agent at the airport curb said they had no cars and refused to bus us to the off airport office. Never again with hertz.
No cars (after 2 hours waiting in line)Negativ: We had 2 reservations. After 2 hours in line (from 11pm to 1am), they tell us they don't have car for us. Had to come back the next day.
The more you know...Positiv: The price I saw on my online booking! $10/day for a 2016 Chevy Malibu!
Returning the car was quick and easy!Negativ: The ACTUAL price I had to pay when I arrived because Mexican law requires the purchase of some Mandatory 3rd-Party Liability insurance which added 200% to the price of my daily rental. An additional $20/day.
Customers should really be informed about this in advancen, as this can easily be taken into consideration during the online booking process.
Also, my Emerald Club number was not connected to my reservation and I really had to negotiate HARD with the agent to get them to add it to my account. Was there an option to do this during the reservation? I don't recall. As a frequent National/Emerald user this was disappointing.
Finally, clearing Mexican customs & immigration was less hassle, paperwork and time consuming than renting a car which I would have found hilarious if it wasn't so annoying. Would give 0 stars if I could!
Also, the shuttle bus from the terminal has back doors for a reason. The staff should f***ing use them instead of piling everyone in the side, then cramming the luggage in so all the passengers are stick inside. Let the people go in and out the back DUHHHH!!!
Okay... rant finished, but seriously those are legitimate points!
Negativ: Advertised as $83 for the week but ended up being almost $300 with "mandatory" insurance. Bait and switch
Mexico upcharges and there's nothing you can do abPositiv: New car, clean, works.Negativ: They claimed that the car I reserved wasn't available (it was) and charged me extra $20/day for a crappy car, plus the insurance surcharge. This was very expensive.
Price doubled at counterPositiv: Booked online for 6 days economy for 234.00 at counter total was 567.00... Not reliable pricing and 1 hour wait for them to prep. Car
Preis verdoppelt am SchalterPositiv: Wir haben online gebucht für 6 Tage Wirtschaft für 567.00 234.00 am Schalter insgesamt war ... Nicht zuverlässig pricing und 1 Stunden warten für sie zubereiten. Auto
6x increase of price on arrivalPositiv: Car was okNegativ: Charged $40/day for "mandatory insurance" which was not mentioned before hand.
3 dollars per day is a hoaxNegativ: I rented a Jetta for 3 usd per day, but it turned ou that third party insurance ( basic by the way) is 33 usd per day. I think this is how they get you yo rent with them and then hike up the price. Also I came with the tank half full and they were charging me 70 usd to fill it up. In MEXICO that translates to 3.5 times the cost of gas. I took it myself given the price.
Expensive not PaylessPositiv: The service was good. Jorge was helpful. Negativ: Insurance and fees came to $130 for 2 days.
It was not inexpensive.
Positiv: We returned our car to Budget
Positiv: Nice efficient peopleNegativ: The whole mexico insurance thing is an unexessay surprise
Kayak should take responsibility to explain it
Beware the insurance man comes Positiv: Sure...$1 per day to rent the car and $49 per day required for insurance. Pretty expensive for a mini and underpowered vehicle.
Horrible service and hidden fees that doubled rentNegativ: A listed total cost of 250 cost us 530 because of fees charged upon arrival. That is over double the cost!!!then the car maxes noises and had a service light. My husband spent over an hour at local office in Adan Jose only to have employees refuse to swap car out! Be aware that although they tell you total cost in Cabo that in NOt true!!! Nothing you can do once there with three children:-(
Quick and hassle free car rentalPositiv: Quick, friendly staff, helpful staff
Huge hidden costs Negativ: We rented a car for 10 days in Cabo Mexico. They refused to take our travel insurance or anything similar. They made us buy their insurance which is almost 2.5 times the cost of the car itself per day. Everything ended up costing 4 times more than we anticipated. This information was not available ANYWHERE when we booked the cars ahead of time. I feel scammed.
Misleading priceNegativ: Rental price was $25 for trip then forced me at check out to buy $575 in insurance for the trip and wouldn't let me rent the care without it. All in all was just misleading.
Positiv: great car Nissan VersaNegativ: Expensive
Slow in returning vehicle
Only 2 clerks at the desk with a long line up
Positiv: Price was excellentNegativ: When picking up the rental salesman was very pushy on wanting us to purchase additional insurance. Since I am already covered by other means, I usually declined additional insurance but it was very tough to do so this time.
Thrifty used the opportunity of a flat tire (on their car) to gouge meNegativ: I rented a car from Thrifty recently in San Jose del Cabo. When I received the car, I was told that it was a brand new car and they quickly hustled me through the inspection process. While I was there, they tried extraordinarily hard to sell me on full coverage insurance. While I was driving the car on the highway (going more than 100 kph), the car experienced a flat tire (right passenger side front tire). It was extremely dangerous and I was able to cross the median and move to the frontage road to change the tire. When I returned the car, I was told that there were minor “scrapes” on the underside of the car and that the tire was damaged (although, there was no apparent visual evidence of damage to the tire). I was charged $US 85 for the scrapes and WAS ASKED TO PAY FOR THE FLAT TIRE ($US 50) !!! To say that I am surprised that I was asked to pay for a wear and tear item and then asked to pay for “scrapes” that may or may not have been there when I rented the vehicle (way up UNDER the front of the bumper) or could have happened when the tire went flat and I had to exit the highway in an umarked spot may be an understatement. I believe that Thrifty is not actually in the rental car business – but rather the insurance scam business. It is clear that the business model is to get people in with low rates, try and upgrade their insurance, and then charge them for faulty equipment all the while claiming ignorance.
Total trick to upsell you insurance. Positiv: Not much Negativ: The good deal turned into an opportunity to upsell over priced insurance and screw you.
They said we damaged the carNegativ: We didn't damage the car, we missed a scratch on the orignals damage inspection. Then they charged us for it.
Negativ: Car was tiny. It was clean and economical on gas but very small.
The Agency tried to charge $2500 on my credit card and when I refused they lowered it to $500 but raised the rate by $30. I expected to pay $20/day insurance over the $3/date rental but they charged over $30/day. I know it is the Mexican rip-off.
ScamPositiv: Nothing. Negativ: We showed up with a reservation costing us $141. They told us we'd have to purchase insurance there(we expected this due to Mexico law) with full insurance it was going to be $650. Too much. We asked about just liability, and they told us we could but it would be a $2000 hold on our card. After arguing with them, one guy leaned over and told us he'd be willing to work it out to be $371 if we gave him $60 in cash, which was obviously for him. Totally a scam, so we took our business somewhere else. We ended up with Budget and they were totally legit!
Over priced old carPositiv: The car was clean and the staff extremely friendly, however someone took our luggage either intentional or by accident at their store and they had no camerasNegativ: They lost our luggage. They gave us an old Nissan Tiida and charged us around $65/day
Positiv: My pick up was great , clean car great serviceNegativ: Drop off: agent horrible behavior we had to call the manager to assist us. I would highly recommend to fire him .
Very rude staffPositiv: Very little to like.Negativ: They spoke poor English, which is understandable since it is not an a predominately English-speaking area. They took an extreme amount of time to get our paperwork filled out, and we got our keys almost 45 minutes after waiting in their hot lobby (not air conditioned well). When we returned our car, they pointed out damage on the car which we are certain was not our fault. We should taken pictures of the car at a full 360 degrees. We pointed out the damage when we picked up the car, but their employee did not mark it properly on their form. When we complained about this, their employees started becoming aggressive and very confrontational. We may have slightly raised the tone of our voices to indicate our disappointment/frustration, but they took it to another level and tried to make us feel like fools. If you are smart, please make the right decision and do not rent your car from this Thirfty location. The staff displayed terrible customer service. This may look like a deal, but it is just not worth the money or the headaches.
NO carNegativ: I was a few minutes late arriving into Cabo and they gave away my car. Absurd policy.
Whatcha out for these guy!!!Negativ: What a complete bunch of lies. They promised me a weekly rental at $240, but when I arrived, I was required to have an additional $400 worth of insurance. I went with Thrifty because they are well known in The US, but they are obviously not paying attention to how their Cabo oporationot is treating their customers. I had no choice and had to continue with the rental. I had my two young daughters with me and I wasn't about to drag them around the airport looking for another rental car.
Then, to make it even sleezier, there is a time share company with an office there at Trifty that will pay your additional insurance charge on the car if you go sit through a two hour tours at one of their properties. I feel scammed.
