Negativ: the Alamo office next to San Juan International Airpirt was VERY difficult to find. We spent about an hour driving around and talked to 3 different professionals (and got 3 different locations).
Will charge you different amount than the billNegativ: This place is a scam. First of all, the cost will end up being triple the Kayak price after all the extra taxes and fees. Then, after returning the car and getting a receipt for one price, you you'll receive a final bill for a different amount. I'm pretty sure that's fraud. It will take phone calls and 5-7 days for them to process your refund for their mistake- with no apology. Recommend literally any other rental agency.
Be ready for hard-upsellPositiv: The initial price was reasonable. Everyone was nice, even though I had to say 'no' a hundred times to their upsell attempts.
The car looked pretty good and was clean. Negativ: They force you to buy insurance for $12 a day. I had the letter from my credit card company saying they cover CDW, but they would not rent to me unless I bought this over insurance that was supposedly something beyond the CDW that was provided by my credit card.
They try to sell you "roadside assistance"? I thought if their car broke down, they were on the hook to get you another car, but they had some song and dance about how it would be up to me and that I'd probably be stranded.
The car rattled a lot (had seen some tough roads, I think).
Positiv: The man who helped us at drop-off was extremely helpful and kind.
$2,500 security deposit and charged me $139, vs. the $86 they quoted mPositiv: Th car was great and transportation to and from the airport worked out well.Negativ: They quoted me at one price then charged me a rate that was much higher than what the car was quoted at online. Quoted me at $86 online and then when I got to the rental place they told me $139, I was pissed and told showed them the quote, but they would not budge and once you get to the rental facility, you do not really have a lot of options. Terrible customer service and false online quotes. Plus the security deposit was $2,500, which could have paid for half of the car itself.
Positiv: We rented an SUV from Alamo for three months in Costa Rica. The first SUV had a transmission problem and Alamo replaced it with a maintenance free vehicle. The vehicle ran fine for the remaining 2 1/2 months.Negativ: Our contract with Alamo was in dollars. However, Alamo in Costa Rica converted the charges to colons at the a favorable exchange rate for Alamo. This ruse is a way for Alamo to squeeze more money from unsuspecting Gringos. To resolve this problem I had to contact Alamo's corporate office in the U.S.
Negativ: Insurance upsells/requirements for far more than the price of the damn car
Positiv: Everyone was very helpful. Pick up and drop off was quick and painless.
Positiv: We originally had a car reservation with a different company. It was canceled due to our delayed flight. It was quick and easy to reserve with Alamo. Negativ: They wouldn't accept our 3rd party international car insurance to cover their suvs. Only sedans. So we were required to pay for theirs. (An additional $500)
People We're Very FriendlyPositiv: People behind the counter were very friendly and didn't apply sales pressure to get the full insurance. Tried to find us a better rate but the internet rate we had was very good. We were able to drop off the car at our hotel that had an Alamo/National office.Negativ: The car we received was very well used. It had a shimmy at 75 kph.
Positiv: friendly and competent staffNegativ: cost twice as much as online estimate
Insurance is expensive!Positiv: My car was ok, and people were efficient and pleasant.t.
I did not have any real problems except with pricing.Negativ: They force you to buy some sort of insurance, so the price is NOT what you see on the website. I just went ahead and paid for all inclusive - it turned out to be about $80 per day.
Good car. Bad servicePositiv: Car was high quality. Comfortable. Negativ: Extra charges. Bad service. Simply a ripoff
Gutes Auto. Schlechter ServicePositiv: Auto war von sehr hoher Qualität. Komfortabel.Negativ: Zusätzliche Gebühren. Schlechter Service. Einfach eine Abzocke
Was charged $250 more than the price quoted on your site.Negativ: On pickup, I was told that I was required to pay $250 more for additional insurance, or I wouldn't be allowed to rent the car. With my spouse, and 2 tired kids in tow in a foreign country, I had no choice but to pay up. False advertising at least, fraud at worst!
Negativ: Our flight was delayed and when I arrived in San Jose with my family (including 3 children) at 11.30pm they had given my car away and there was no other cars. They stated that they only keep the car for 2 hours. I had provided my flight information when I booked the car. What kind of a car rental at an airport would not as a first step check if the flight had been delayed if the customer do not show up.
I will never ever in my life use Budget again.
Positiv: That everything went smoothly. No problemsNegativ: NA
Did not have the carNegativ: Even though the car was reserved, the place didn't have our car for us. We had to find another car rental, very stressful upon arrival and triple the price given the last minute.
Car not there at pickupNegativ: we had to wait to get the car for a few hours because they had non available. We wound up with a smaller vehicle than we had wanted.
Horrible pickup, car unsafe.Positiv: The car didn't break down, the return process was fast.Negativ: We arrived later in the evening, exhausted. The counter was grossly understaffed and VERY slow moving. Causing us to wait over an hour before even reaching the counter. Once at the counter we were told the car we had reserved weeks in advance was not available (it was needed to have a car with some clearance for our plans), but because it was late at night we had no choice but to take what was offered to us. The replacement car had several spots with noticeable body damage and almost completely worn down tires, I was genuinely concerned about the safety of the car. Then we were told we HAD to buy VERY VERY expensive "mandatory" insurance despite having pre-purchased a policy. Then we were told we HAD to sign a BLANK credit card slip authorizing essentially any amount Budget wants to charge. I asked for them to write in an amount before I signed and they refused and told me that ALL car rental places in Costa Rica do this, I travel to Costa Rica a lot and this has NEVER been done before, so that was an outright lie. I would have switched companies but I couldn't because of the hour. I will definitely not be using Budget, and I will be advising all of my colleagues not to as well.
Positiv: Good little car but a little too smallNegativ: To small Low power
Be aware of insurance difficultiesPositiv: The car itself was great for getting around Costa Rica, I don't recommend anything less than an SUV for that. The problem we encountered was paying for the insurance through Kayak via Allianz. When we arrived at Budget having insurance already, we were told that if we wanted to use our third party insurance (Allianz) we had to put down a $3,000.00 hold on a credit card that we weren't prepared for and was not easy to resolve. We ended up having to cancel the Allianz insurance and purchase insurance through Budget which brought our total from $140 (car rental + Allianz at time of booking through Kayak) to $400 (rental + Budget insurance). Not a cost we had prepared for, plus we had to spend over an hour resolving the issue once we arrived at Budget.
Fine Car, Charges ExcessivePositiv: The car was clean and worked well. It was sized to contain my wife and I, and all our bags. It was a newer model and contained some good features that we enjoyed using.Negativ: Check-in took over an hour due to a line of people. There are added costs that you must use in Costa Rica, one being insurance. Unless you can clearly indicate your coverage in a foreign country, you are required to purchase insurance for the car. This was a significant addition to the base car rental price but it is a requirement from all companies. There are probably cheaper options than the one we chose but everyone should be aware. We also wanted a GPS device for navigation but it was very problematic in operation. The commands coming from the device were muffled and we could not understand them. I could not attach the device in an easily viewable area, so my wife had to stay connected to the device to keep me informed of where to turn. Finally, the device would turn off or switch from the specified directions from time to time. It was difficult enough to determine where to go without having to input the directions again and again. This device was not worth the daily price we paid. Lastly, the check out was slightly delayed. They could not shuttle us to a hotel that we were staying in before our flight the next day (San Jose is further away from the airport ) but they did drop us off at the airport to try and find transport from there.
Great experience overall but traded in our car forPositiv: Great experience overall. Once we got a better car. Negativ: Don't get the daihatsu terios. Not a good car. Better off getting a Toyota rav4.
Basically got robbed by BudgetPositiv: not muchNegativ: LONG wait - only 2 people in line and still waited 45 minutes.
Booked a small suv online for $160 with NO mention of required insurance (that normally visa covers) and fees that ended up making this rental $470.
Ended up with a several years old, very used (over 30k), gutless, tiny, ant infested suv.
They are taking advantage of you and I suggest to everyone looking at this - DO NOT GO THERE.
Price gougedPositiv: No restrictions on where I could go with the car. Air conditioning worked. Offered WiFi device for $5/day, and that worked great. Negativ: Reserved an automatic, but their computer didn’t show it, so I was forced to upgrade. Paid for insurance via Kayak, but told that was no good and that we were required to get additional insurance that cost more than $100. The shuttle to/from airport is slow, and we waited almost an hour to get to the airport after drop off. Car’s brakes stuck and needs new shocks.
Dollar is a dishonest company.Positiv: Dollar lured my family in with a low price listed on the internet.
BUT it was only an empty promise as they made us pay nearly twice that amount upon our arrival to pick up our reserved vehicle. Negativ: My family paid in full online prior to my trip.
We received a confirmation of both our payment and reservation.
After arriving in our destination (Costa Rica) Dollar made us pay additional insurance and fees to obtain our car. With our young children in tow and after pleading with them for 2 hours we had to pay the additional money to drive away.
A formal credit discard dispute has been filed.
Stay away from this dishonest company.
Misrepresented on KayakPositiv: Customer service at Dollar Negativ: Kayak misrepresented the vehicle. I booked a vehicle that could fit 7 with insurance. When I got there I found out the vehicle only seated 5 and the insurance I paid for through Kayak wasn't even basic insurance for this country. Ended up paying 400 more than originally quoted!! Could have saved almost 200 going directly through Dollar.
Costa Rica charges 3x the contract pricePositiv: Nice new Hyundai Tuscan. Spacious and good economy. Negativ: Agency does not even pretend to honor prebooking price. Charged more than 3x the daily rate, then added mandatory insurance which doubled the total price.
No benefit to prebooking. Very disappointed. I’d give the overall rating zero stars, but that is not an option.
Negativ: They dont tell you about the insurance when booking online. Once you get there they tell you to buy some mandatory insurance and on top of that give you a different car. Also when booking a car, you pick one car but it books a different car. Rip off.
Hidden Insurance is a HUGE money maker for themPositiv: We received a fairly new hon Day Tucson, the car drove well aside from a few sounds we heard coming from underneath the car and from the tire. Air-conditioning blue ice cold which is great in the hot Costa Rican weather we were supposed to receive a manual transmission but received an automatic transmission so that was kind of a plus . Negativ: What I didn’t like is that I paid online $50 for the rental which I thought was an amazing deal, where economy gets you is they tell you the insurance that you bye is not enough to cover what you need in Costa Rica, so you’re required to pay minimum $600 for insurance, which 200 gets returned to you because it was a deposit. We usually rent cars every vacation we go on. The insurance included is normally enough. In Italy we spent the same amount of money as we did in Costa Rica but we were able to keep the car for three weeks versus three days
Do not rent from economy! Scam!!Negativ: They're a scam. The price you pay online is not the final price. The final price will be at least 5 times what's listed online. Do not rent from them. Shame on Kayak for allowing them to be listed in the search engine!
Thay say my insurance I buy no good they charge 562 us dollars for wPositiv: NothingNegativ: Hwy robbery.when we are arrivin 6 pm whit 3 kids and I have to drive 200km we do not have choses to accept very bad company
Positiv: The vehicle.. only.. it served us well as we traveled thru the countryNegativ: The crazy price for insurance that they don’t tell you about up front. Paid a little over 120.00 for car and 500.00 for insurance. They try to scare you into buying it, and tell you how crazy the Ticos drive. Not true.. not crazier then many countries i have traveled.
Easy to return carPositiv: Open 24 hrs and very close to airport. Very easy to return car late in evening w/ no issues.
Scam and terrible servicePositiv: The car was great, brand new HyundaiNegativ: I was renting in Costa Rica (at the airport) and the attendant, Jimmy, was a scam artist motivated by shady commissions Economy must pay to rip you off.
I had been warned that there are additional required fees and taxes in Costa Rica, so I knew the price was not fully inclusive. We were renting for a week and when giving me the options of ‘required’ coverage, he wrote out the totals on a piece of paper giving me three options in hand drawn boxes.
He explained it would be $500 off the bat (more than I was paying for the full rental) but that I could get better coverage (lower deductible) for $550 and the best coverage which wouldn’t be that much more - $650. I said that seemed really high and wondered if he had more details on how that breaks down. He said it’s the government, they have a monopoly, nothing you can do, not their fault.
So although skeptical, I didn’t know what else to do. I said I wanted the lowest one and continued with the check in. He took my credit card and charged me. Then we continued with the paper work. He had me sign two blank charge slips. I asked him why - he said it was in case there was damage or we ran off with the car. Once again, I tried to object, but saw no other options.
Finally, at the end, he gave me the detailed contract to sign. At this point, he has charged my card, has two other blank slips of paper with my signature to charge, and now I see he has circled three kinds of coverage for me (with no explanation other than ‘initial here, here and here’). I read the contract and realize he has locked me into a bunch of coverage that is not required. I ask him what these different coverages are and if they are required. He talks me in circles saying the government required them. I confirm the contract says they are optional and he is forcing me into a larger price. At this point he gets snappy and says I shouldn’t say he forced me into anything, that he’s just helping and I didn’t tell him I had coverage back home, that was new information. That got me heated. I insisted he only charge what was required and the price went down to about $250.
He may still have been scamming me with the $250 figure, but I was so exhausted from this ordeal that I couldn’t keep fighting with him. I’m not sure how they compensate Economy agents but from what I can tell they are incentivized to sell you on insurance you do not want/need. Total scam artists, terrible service, will never rent from them again.
San Jose Economy is NOT onsite. Negativ: The return site at San Jose said it was onsite, but it was off site and required a short 1 mile shuttle.
There was nobody there when I dropped off the car. Just left the key in the ignition with the doors unlocked and hoped that someone that worked for Economy would get there before someone stole the vehicle.
Positiv: Car was all right.Negativ: Extra charges and price for upgrading to 4wd was exorbitant (1000 us/week total).
Pickup/dropoff was very slow process.
When returning, they tried to rip us off for missing gas and they were trying to charge another party massive amounts of money for a small dent.
Complete rip offNegativ: Company forced us to buy insurance that cost more than the total amount that we paid for the rental. It was a complete sham and if it were in the US - they would have their license removed. The car was completely old and beat up. When we got back - they accused us of putting a mark on the car, but we fortunately took extensive photos of the car before we left, so we were able to dispute it.
Negativ: complete scam of as everyone said.
So soPositiv: The car reservation was for $31 but I needed up paying $40 a day for insurance. It was ridiculous. Not to mention I ended up stopping at a service station and they checked all my fluids just for me to find out that the brake fluid was extremely low (dangerously low). This was concerning considering I was driving through mountains and steep cliffs.
Positiv: nothingNegativ: Response toThe pick up. The wait was very long causing at least one group to leave in disgust. Given a choice we would have done the same. And the later time was not recrded.
Sticker shock Positiv: Had the reservation price tripled once the mandatory insurance was added on. It would be nice to see insurance prices listed on your website rather than being surprised first thing on arrival.
Positiv: Guys at the office were greatNegativ: Radio not working!!
Insurance purchased from Alianz not relevant (had to cancel)
Car rental Insurance in Costa Rica - Beware!Positiv: We were happy with the service and the vehicle in general was good. We did find our vehicle a bit squeaky and the shocks could have been replaced. Having seen the roads though, we understand why the vehicle was in the condition it was. The service was great and he took pity on us when he realized we weren't expecting the extra $800 in insurance and he threw in a GPS, which was a total life saver.Negativ: Please be aware that the cost of the vehicle rental does NOT include the insurance. The rental was estimated at $150 but when we got there, the mandatory insurance coverage took the total cost to $920 CAD. We had read about this, but we thought the credit card insurance covered it. With all the information printed out and in hand, we realized no cards will cover third party liability - which is mandatory there. The options were to put thousands down as a deposit and pay for any / some damages, or get full coverage for MUCH more per day. Please keep this in mind when booking a vehicle. And a 4 wheel drive is an absolute must if you want to drive any of the 'roads' in hard to reach but beautiful places.
Positiv: Leute an der Rezeption waren superNegativ: Radio funktionierte nicht!
Allianz - Versicherung kaufen nicht relevant (musste stornieren)
Negativ: Charged for extra insurance even though I already purchased supplental insurance for the rental through the site. Car was old and struggled to go uphill.
Positiv: Friendly serviceNegativ: Poor service from internet portable device
Positiv: Freundlicher ServiceNegativ: Schlechter Service vom Internet tragbares
Positiv: Friendliness of the people in the office. The car wasn’t available that was ordered. So the gladly accommodated me. Negativ: The car wasn’t washed. But it was the only complaint from my whole experience so I really don’t think It was a big deal.
Positiv: Car was in good shapeNegativ: The reservation price didn't include a $30/day mandatory insurance fee that is required I'm Costa Rica. So, my quote was for $7xx, and total cost was actually $1100. AND, the guy at the ciunter was a total dick and kept trying to sell us on the optional insurance to make us pay EVEN MORE. UGH.
Excellent Positiv: This was my first rental experience and it was great. Hassel free and enjoyable.
Bait and Switch with Hertz in San Jose Costa RicaNegativ: We were given a very good rate when we booked but when we showed up we not given an option of taking out additional insurance. We discussed at length- the entire process of renting the car took a very long time. They tried to charge me over $500. After much discussion they wouldn't let us take the car for an amount that was over 3x the quoted rate. We really needed to get going and the Hertz facility is away from the airport so reluctantly signed. The front desk employee was rude and found VERY small print to justify the increase in the rate. I will not use Hertz again at this location.
DissapointingPositiv: Not muchNegativ: The internet booking site was COMPLETELY mis-leading. It made no mention of the exorbitant insurance fees. It felt like fraud. I'm not sure I'll ever use Hertz again, especially in Costa Rica.
Never againPositiv: NothingNegativ: Car had over 100,000 miles no power and was charged almost triple my quoted rate because no one at booking says you will be asked to get Costa Rican insurance. So my $80 car was $230. Don't buy the third party insurance it's useless here in CR. More money lost. Not happy at all
Didn't have my car available despite reservationPositiv: nothingNegativ: They gave my car away. They literally had no automatic cars available the day I arrived at their location. I had to find another rental car company on the spot that day.
AusgezeichnetPositiv: Dies war meine erste rental Erfahrung, und es war großartig. Großes Aufsehen kostenlos und sehr angenehm.
Disappointed - bait and switchPositiv: Car and experience was fine, but....Negativ: After all was stated very clearly on the confirmation.... The agent at the desk required that I add insurance or not be able to rent the car. Of course, my credit card covers insurance, and this was a shock and dismay (and an extra hundred dollars!). Foul!!!!!!
Beware of the InsurancePositiv: The service was great, staff was helpful and prompt. Negativ: It would have been nice to know the full price I'd be paying for a rental car before landing in this foreign country fully dependent on getting it. I felt very mislead by the pricing I was given in the reservation. In Costa Rica, insurance is required and this was never mentioned in the booking process. Therefore I ended up having to pay over $400 (with an extra $800 held) for the car I expected to rent for $83. I just thought that was very dishonest by the rental car company and the booking company.
did not have car readyNegativ: they did not have the car ready and told us to call within 4 hours. this delayed our trip and exhausted us. Instead of waiting, we decided to go to their site and there were a multitude of cars available. They claimed that they did not have cars available, because many people had not returned them from the day before. Customer service was slow and it lagged the promptness needed to get in and out. Also, if you prepay insurance from the US, it will not work. You are obligated to purchase their insurance. Our reservation was worthless.
Negativ: When I came there was no SUV's. So I had to wait more 5 hours to get one.
More than quoted
Negativ: Als ich kam es gab keine SUV's. Also musste ich warten mehr 5 Stunden, bis man ein.
The final cost was 3 times the price I bookedPositiv: New car and easy drop offNegativ: When I booked the car and chose Thrifty the price was 175. At the end it cost me 540 with all taxes fees etc. There was no way to get it for 175. I feel I was misled and will not recommend
Thrifty Car RentalPositiv: Very friendly service. Threw in a GPS for $5
MisleadingNegativ: I had already bought insurance but was told it didn't work in Costa Rica and that I had to buy the insurance they provided. Nothing I said could change this. The insurance ended up doubling the price of the rental. I had also asked about the size of the SUV we were renting prior to arriving and was told it would hold 5 adults comfortably. Not hardly! Ended up having to pay an additional amount to have a somewhat larger SUV. Then on top of all that, they put a $950 deposit amount on my credit card making it unusable to me the rest of my trip. I have NEVER had a car rental company put that large of a deposit on my credit card. NEVER!! That pretty much wiped out my spending money as I only brought two credit cards with me for this trip. It really would have been nice to know all this additional expense before I arrived so I could have adequately planned.
Insurance ripoff Positiv: Good pickup location and quick to the counter to pickup the car.Negativ: We had a letter from Chase credit card as they required from the thrifty Costa Rica website. He wouldn’t accept it- “it doesn’t state amount covered” - it stated up to the entire value of the car. So we were forced to buy the coverage since where else are you going to go. DO NOT TENT FROM THRIFTY AT THE SJO AIRPORT!
Disappointed!Positiv: The car was comfortable and easy to drive. They had an efficient check in system. Drop off was immediate upon return of the car.Negativ: Know that Costa Rica car rentals require purchase of insurance which was an additional $42 a day. This was an unexpected charge and was not budgeted for. Also, we had a flat tire issue that we did not cause, and I know the agency would have no idea of our trustworthiness, but we got no help or guidance with this issue. Our hotel helped us find a tire two hours away where we drove to with the spare tire on.
Sucks!!Positiv: Nothing!! Never again!!Negativ: My mom passed away so I had to leave earlier then planned. They were going to charge me for turning the car in early. So....i left and my wife turned the car in for me and they charged me $50 because I wasn't there to turn it in. If they are the last rental car company with a car.....i will walk.
"Estimated" price was very offPositiv: clean car, friendly staff, easy check in and check out. Negativ: We were quoted an estimated 80$ rental. When we showed up, we had to pay nearly $500.
Not the car or the value promisedPositiv: Not muchNegativ: The car we reserved on line stated it would fit 2 adults and 4 children with luggage. We were given a compact Mitsubishi Lancer that wasn't even big enough to hold 4 suitcases in the trunk. We had to put a suit case and all carry ons in the back seat with our 2 kids making for an incredibly uncomfortable ride. The car interior was in good shape, but the exterior was severely beat up with major dents all around the car. We should have known the advertised price was a scam. At the counter when we added the insurance (clearly advertised for $11/day) Our $60 pre-paid rental became nearly $300 when they required us to add ins for $227 for the 6 days!!! Bait and switch.
Credit Card information stolen from Thrifty Car RentalPositiv: Good clean carNegativ: Highly inflated "full coverage" price
My credit card information was stolen from rental agency and within one hour of leaving Thifty with our rental car, 4 (FOUR) fraudulent charges appeared on card. Thifty was the one and only time the credit card ever left my secure "scan-safe" metal wallet. Fortunately, Visa noticed the "irregular" charges and froze the card. But, very disappointed. Don't risk it!
Easy airport pickupPositiv: Found the shuttle easily - they were pretty quick to drive me to the lot and got me processed fast. Negativ: I knew about the mandatory insurance before hand so I wasn't shocked, but I can see how others would be.
Positiv: Great customer service!
Negativ: it's a traaaap
