Be ready for the unexpected Positiv: After driving the kia optima for 15 days, I came to appreciate it's acceleration, great brakes and comfort.Negativ: Always check with your home insurance before renting in Mexico. The car was cheap to rent at 178.00 but mandatory liability added at $29 a day with $800 on hold on your credit card or $59 per day full coverage with a $200 hold on your card. Ended up paying $733 for entire trip. In Cancun there is no booth at the airport. Ace shares a space with Fox Car Rentals. Called them but they never sent a van. We finally walked our luggage across the street from the airport to find their office. The RAVs we rented were not coming until nightime. They only had one RAV in their inventory so they offered us the new Optimas. Every step was a long wait. The best part was the reliability of the car and returning it was quick. They did return us to the airport. Warning: If you get a traffic ticket in Mexico, police remove the license plate until you pay and show proof. You cannot return the car without its plates. Do not rent a car without plates as many policemen will stop you and demand a bribe. We met other tourists with this problem. We were targeted by police in Campeche because the car was a rental and we were foreigners. They nearly confiscated my brother's license and asked for a bribe of $108 which we paid.
Negativ: Upfront cost of a required insurance was not disclosed. We found out after the fact that we had to buy 700.00 worth of insurance
Tried to Scam Me... DO NOT RENT AT ACEPositiv: Nothing... they are lying cheats... DO NOT Rent From ACE. Negativ: Reserved with Months in Advance at a price of U$16 per day for a 2 week rental. Due to plane delays, the shit-show in customs and then NO ACE stand or person in the airport... finally made it to their Office 1:30- 2 hours behind schedule. The slimeball at the counter told me they no longer had my reservation... that they would make a new one and the new price would be U$60 per day with No Insurance Coverage or U$75 per day with full coverage. Decided to go to Hertz.... same day no reservation and full coverage, same car class U$45 per day. Clearly a scam at ACE
Worst car rental everNegativ: Person we extremely rude and lied about the cars available. Tried to get me to spend an extra $500 for the week to get the car I ordered. Plus the car needed air in the tires and none of the windows worked.
Shady Business Run by Shady PeoplePositiv: NothingNegativ: This company lied to us about price and availability of cars. They canceled our reservation after we stepped out of the office to talk on the phone and then when we went in to reclaim they said they had no more vehicles. Poor company, AVOID AVOID. They are associated with FOX Rental Car in Mexico.
Upsold us a broken navigation systemNegativ: Bad customer service. No refund when complained about the broken navigation system.
Bad customer service. Feel ripped off. Shady company.
Terrible experience in CancunPositiv: Price was attractiveNegativ: The 7-seater that we had booked in Cancun was unavailable when we got to the car rental and we were offer instead an...11-seater bus that neither my wife not I could drive confidently given the size. We were told that a Chevy Suburban might be available "in a couple of hours" but the car had not yet been returned by previous client. This failed to instill much confidence and we asked our booking to be cancelled. We hope that ACE will return the c.$800 that we paid for the failed rental as they failed to honor their part of the contract. At this stage, we will not recommend ACE to any one considering that on top of the money already paid we had to add some insurance (despite our credit card insurance blanket) which would have made the cost comparable to what we paid at Hertz.
Negativ: Sraff could not accept that i decline insurance (i have CDW with my credit card) on the grounds that my credit card's number does not have bulge and the manual credit card processor cannot capture the numbers. They woukd not take an electronic deposit apparently because customers can cancel it, rendering useless for the car agency.
I had to pay for basic secondary insurance so that i could use my credit card and rent the car.
Schlechter Kundenservice. Das Gefühl, abgezockt zu werden. Shady Company.
Positiv: Good car, good service handling the car itself.Negativ: Insurance requirements in Mexico were terribly expensive and seems this should have been more obvious upon booking. The bill was 3 to 4 times what we expected to pay in order to take the car off the lot.
Negativ: didnt give me the car grade I paid for, they gave me the bottom level for the same price!
Forced to buy insurance - $25/day!!!!!! On top of confirmed rental feeNegativ: False advertising by Kayak or Alamo, both?
Positiv: Nothing!Negativ: Nobody was there when I arrived.... so I’ve decided to rent a car from the other company
Positiv: Good: the staff was very helpful. The vehicle ran well. Drop off process was easy & quick. The shuttle drivers were helpful and courteous. The lady at the airport when we first arrived was very nice and very helpfulNegativ: NOT GOOD: They had the wrong vehicle for us. We specifically asked for a Jeep during the initial phone call rental arrangements, and were told that they would have one of three models available with no problem. The initial vehicle had obviously low air pressure in the front tires, and they have no ability to add air, or even check the air pressure, at the facility.
The worst was the unexpected pricing. I will be filing a dispute claim with Alamo today because of the excessive charges that built up throughout the rental process, resulting in over $525.00 for a 4 day rental of a small Jeep. Unacceptable.
Negativ: Didn't rent very expensive. It shows on price on line and you get there they give another price plus there insurance is very high is very disappointed.
Positiv: Offices conveniently located.Negativ: They force you to pay an insurance.
Not enough communication between kayak and Alamo Negativ: On kayak website, the rental was $9 a day for 8 days . I expected to pay additional stuff as insurance and gaz . But 34 % tax is a way too much !!
My bill ended to be $374 . When I complained to Alamo , they said they were not responsible on what was communicated on your website .
When you go in Vacation with a certain budget it really hearts.
You guys should be more specific, it looks almost as a scam
Car wasn't in great conditionPositiv: Convenient. Close to terminals. Service was pretty fast.Negativ: Had three problems with the car: Key battery didn't work, windshield wipers weren't great, issues with tire pressure.
quoted a price online and was told 4 times that at the pick upPositiv: Nothing.Negativ: I was quoted a price of about $80 for the week but when we arrived they tried charging us four times that amount. I walked away and did not rent from them.
Poor service Negativ: When I rented the car in the app it was supposed to be 60 some dollars which I thought it was a good deal. When I got to the Alamo car rental they bump the price to 600 plus dollars. They couldn't say why it was so much so I ended up cancelling the rental.
Cancun alamo made everything VERY easyPositiv: The Cancun terminal is very frenetic, but the representative walked us thru the chaos calmly, over to the outdoor desk to pick up our car. The walk was about 1,000 feet total. The car we reserved was indeed the car we got, no waiting, no negotiating. Each person there was efficient, detailed and exceedingly friendly!
Excellent ValuePositiv: No coercion to buy additional insurance. Payment with a US credit card covered all additional insurance required (tead the contract fine print for instructions).
Worldmate (Car trawler) handle the reservation flawlessly.Negativ: PU shuttle was late
Positiv: I was ripped off, they charged twice what I was quoted for, total scam.
Negativ: gave away our reservation. Make sure to pay in full in advance.
With no voucher no reservation!Negativ: I made a reservation with Budget, when I arrived in Cancun, they would not give me a car without the payment voucher there was no way for the agent to accept payment from me. Really?
The hertz agent was able to help me,
scandalous « mandatory local » insurance pricePositiv: The initial kayak price for the reservation. The « friendly » Empolyee at the arrival deskNegativ: Arriving around midnight and being hooked with the reservation they drop you off quickly at their location close to the airport. Then they give you the price for their mandatory insurance: 4-5 times the rental price! Insane.
Actually it is usual in Cancun. Check the reviews before any reservation !
Negativ: Bait and switch on need for Mexico specific insurance which cost 3x of the rental car cost.
No car available at Budget, even though we had reserved onePositiv: Quality and fuel economy of car,
Drop off efficiencyNegativ: The Budget counter was unattended and we were routed to Hertz.
We ended up starting from a new reservation, which took an eternity to complete, while being under constant pressure by the agent to buy additional items, such as a fast-lane drop off of the car because, in the words of the Hertz employee, people wait up to 45 min during peak time (obviously this proved to be false, as we dropped off the car with zero wait time.)
Positiv: - Picking up/dropping off the car was easy.
- Great customer service.Negativ: - Car wasn't in good condition as the ride wasn't smooth at all.
- Coverage options were steep.
I felt like I was getting scammedPositiv: The car was clean and good on gasNegativ: Kayak’s quote was $22, but Budget wanted $37 when I got there. They told me I have to get the $300 insurance or I had to pay $3050 that they’d refund when the car was returned. I opted to pay the $3050, but next time I go to Cancun, I’m just going to taxi it. After finding this out, my other friends cancelled their other 2 rental cars and just used a taxi.
They rip you off with the insurance.Positiv: They are at the airport and shuttle you over to get your car, which is nice!Negativ: The car cost us $50 to rent; the insurance was $430. I think that is a total rip off. They do not tell you insurance is not part of renting the car until you go to pick the car up and then you have to haggle with the guys at the desk for an insurance price. We went to Mexico so I truly feel like I got a terrible rate because they knew we were American.
Budget in down town is across the street from cafe Andrade!Positiv: The people that helped us speaks perfect English and was extremely nice and personable. The place is clean and the cars was very fuel efficient!Negativ: I genuinely like this company but looking for the location in downtown was a hot mess. The address that was given to me via email was no where to be seen on google map. Google map pointed budget at a non existence location. We spent literally $40 for taxi parking king for the place. We finally we back to hotel zone budget and they manage to help us from that location with all our reservations. Wish we could've done that in the beginning. Wasted 2 hrs of our morning and wasted money on taxi.
ExperiencePositiv: At the airport everyone was nice and professional. Negativ: Once we got to drop off, we got charge with a lot of hidden fees which was not clearly explained when I was making reservation.
Positiv: No waiting.
Car not therePositiv: NothingNegativ: Car wasn't there even when booked days ahead of time and confirmed. Stay away!
Convenient location right by the airport terminalPositiv: All employees were polite and friendly and spoke emough English to explain our various options for the required Mexican car insurance. The car was clean and available more ot less immediately when we got through the check-in process. No shuttle bus required as the business is just a 1-minute walk across the street grom the airport terminal building. The prices were the lowest we found. Negativ: Checkout paperwork took a lot longer than you can believe even though nobody was in line ahead of us, so allow yourself extra time to make it to your flight.
Hard NoPositiv: Did not rent, was not informed of $2000 deposit.Negativ: Over $2,000 deposit for a $5 rental. Went with Hertz.
Positiv: car was a little beat upNegativ: It took forever to get out of the rental car pickup (1 Hour)
Negativ: it takes to long to get through the paperwork and drive away 40 minutes
Positiv: That they were fast in and out once you got to the counter Negativ: The prices that they had on there kayak website was wrong... it state that the rental is $4.65 for six days.. when I got there it was 88 dollars a day 300 hold on the credit card.. I need a car to get to the hotel so i got the car for one day then I return before my trip was over they have me 388 dollars back before 24 hour...
Negativ: Only 1 hour late and they charged me for extra day. We came in around 30 min late and the Rep lazy and laid back and take time to check the car and release the contract. In US we just drop the car and go. In Mexico you have to wait the rep to release the contract then you have to sign all the paper. then you can go.
I will not happy and never rent at dollar
The HustlePositiv: It was nice car it was comfortable.Negativ: The price at first was ridiculously cheap online like $5.00 for 5 days, when we got there at the rental the price skyrocketed like $70.00 a day they informed us we should get insurance because the car might be stolen or if it was scratched by someone. With much negotiating we got the car reduced to a somewhat reasonable price of $39 a day. Then when you think you are getting your car you get someone who tries to convince you to go to a timeshare to get your car paid in full. It was stressful but we had a nice trip and the car worked out to be a good car. We didn't do the timeshare from past experience so it cost us near $300 which is a fair deal.
Misleading price Negativ: This was a complete false advertising scam. I am very disappointed with dollar and kayak for advertising a false price. Dollar in Cancun REQUIRES rental insurance so it turned out to be 5x the price of the advertised rental. Even though I have insurance through my credit card and privately, they require the insurance.
There is a catchPositiv: The daily rate was unbelievable so we figured there would be a catch and there was. You have to buy liability insurance that was nearly $30 a day. The car was very basic but it served our needs.
Appalling, never againNegativ: They blatantly lied to my face and stole money from us. I will never rent from Dollar again and I think less of kayak for even featuring then on the website.
Negativ: Paid insurance twice
Once on line with economy car rental. 300$. Same website I rented the car proposed to buy the insurance...
Than when arrived in mexico America car rental forced me to buy the insurance with them.
As they did not accept the insurance bought on line proposed by economy ...
It is clearly a scam
Positiv: Pickup and dropoffNegativ: That the prices on the website didn’t included the insurance or any information about it
That is was not a European Volkswagen and looks like a fake Volkswagen with bad options and not a stabile car
Not happyNegativ: While the daily rate was extremely low, the car companies any would not rent us the car without purchasing their insurance. Their insurance rate was exceedingly high. It felt like a swindle. Additionally I had to return the original car that I rented after theee days because it was faulty. This process took along time and basically ate up a day of my vacation.
Insurance is very expensive when you get thereNegativ: I was paying $26 rental fee and selected $11 dlls insurance but when I got there they said I had to pay $50/day for the required insurance, so I ended paying way more than expected
No cars = no buenoPositiv: That it took an hour to find someone that had a list with our name on it for our reservation just to hear he did not have a car for us.Negativ: We were at the airport for over 2 hours before we were able to walk to a different rental company and find a car by midnight after 12 hours of travel. We will never use this company again!!!
Insurance had to purchasedNegativ: You need to purchase their insurance of US $ 31.50 per day. You cannot use your credit card insurance instead. It was not shown in the confirmation email or the information page of priceline. So I ended up not renting a car and they drove me back with a shuttle to the airport to take a bus. No fees applied. But anyway, a classical trap or scam. If I rent with Hertz in the US, no insurance is needed and the confirmation mail was the same.
Bait and SwitchPositiv: PriceNegativ: I was traveling with small children, and was specifically looking for a rental car company that was on the airport property. This is why I chose Economy because when I looked it up it was listed to be at the airport. However when we arrived at Cancun we were put into A shuttle that took us on a 15 minute drive with no seatbelts or child safety seats to an offsite car rental place called America car rental. We were able to rent the car we had chosen through economy, although they did try to give us a different car in the beginning. However I was very disappointed with the fact that I thought I had rented from one company at the airport, and it turned out to be a different company offsite.
Positiv: The personnel were nice and knowledgeable. We had no hassle when we dropped it off.Negativ: It was off site. They charged over two hundred dollars for insurance, but it was in Mexico. The car had minor damage throughout the vehicle before we picked it up.
Excellent PricePositiv: Excellent price and service from Rent a car company
Excellent Positiv: Price and easy to rent
they doubled the price on mePositiv: not much after paying twice as much for it then you listed.Negativ: brakes were tight.
Positiv: It was a great experience easy and convenient Negativ: Nothing bad to say
Horrible Positiv: The size of the vehicle was sufficient.Negativ: Customer service. Hidden cost.
Horrible bait and switchPositiv: Shuttle driver helped us out.Negativ: Tried to charge us double the price when we got there, plus a $3000 deposite. Everyone there was having issues, it was a horrible scam!
Positiv: Insurance costs were hidden when booking
SchrecklichPositiv: Die Größe des Fahrzeug war ausreichend.Negativ: Kundenservice. Versteckte Kosten.
Positiv: Wenn Sie die Buchung Versicherung kostet waren versteckt
Positiv: It was more competitive price than competitorsNegativ: They gave us the wrong car and then charged the difference in fare upon return for their mistake.
They decide 2 hours before our arrival to cancel oNegativ: The ag ncy upon arrival decided not to honor our booking and offer us either to do a new booking 30 usd more than what was initially confirmed or they would not give us the car. This was between completly unprofessional and a clear trick to extract more money from foreign tourists! My advice wojld be to stay away from this agency and the possible scam
the rate promissed 180 and they made us pay 680. Negativ: although we have insurance they obligated us to pay thier own insurance at 500 otherwise we had to secure them the value of he car on hold to our credit card
Horrible serviceNegativ: They didnt honor the rate we got unless we bought insurance which cost over three times the rental amount even though we had multiple insurance policies through our credit cards as well as travelers insurance. The only way they could let us use our insurance is if we gave them a $10,000 usd deposit for the car.
Positiv: Staff were friendly, accamodating and willing to negotiate price due to misunderstanding regarding credit card coverage of damage insurance - ended up giving us a good deal. Car was great. Overall a good value. Negativ: Additional costs such as airport fee and taxes not advertized and not clear. Not sure if this is something Kayak should post or company needed to reveal. Check out insurance options and how your credit card may cover. (note they said need to put of collateral equal to value of vehicle to get credit card coverage - credit card company to re-imburse you later)
this was a a mess!!Negativ: they didn't approve the prepaid insurance that I paid. They force me to get their own insurance.. which was 3 times higher than the one I already paid.. There was no option to cancel since there were no more cars and no more companies (it was Dec 30th!!)... so the only option was to buy their own insurance.. which was frustrated and get me really mad
Fire"fly by night operation?"Positiv: Car was comfortable and functioned properly, although it was missing a button on steering wheelNegativ: 1) Misled about price: Reserved one week car rental through Firefly in Cancun Mexico for $150. Was expecting that additional taxes and fees would bring final price to around $300. If only! Price quoted when I went to pick up car was $700 for the week. Was able to negotiate price down to $600, but wasn't in position to find another car at that point.
2) No shuttle service to location at airport (had to ask Hertz shuttle driver to take us) and impossible to find location when dropping of car (we picked up car in dark and, when dropping it off, there was no signage for Firefly at it wasn't nearby another other car rental agencies; no one we asked knew where it was located; had to ask Hertz representative to escort us there.)
Negativ: No transparency on insurance costs (more than the car rental). Very bad surprise.
They didn't wait for me!Negativ: My flight got delayed and I called them twice to let them know. For the second one, I had already landed and told them I'd be out in less than half an hour. They said "no problem".
I walked out and they were gone. Had to hire a last minute car that was 4 times more expensive. Horrible experience.
The cheat you on the exchange ratePositiv: When I arrived, I was told I had to purchase their insurance, and that the insurance through the website was no good in Mexico. The rate for the rental car was $150.00, but with insurance and taxes it came $524.00! That's huge jump in price, but when I returned home, the total bill on my credit card was $604.00 because Firefly when they quoted me the bill, they did so at an exchange rate that was not real, it was actually more. I would not rent here ever again!
OverpricedPositiv: NothingNegativ: They only had one car left. The insurance for car was 4 times the cost of the actual rental price.
A case of bait and switchPositiv: Firefly's idea of a full size vehicle is smaller than my idea of a full size vehicle. I ended up getting a VW Jetta, but they first wanted to give me a Nissan versa as a full size vehicle. Whatever happened to a full size vehicle providing a comfortable ride for 5 people on a road trip?
Firefly is a scam inflicted upon a captive audience traveling in a foreign country. Negativ: Firefly is a scam! The price that I agreed on was not the price I was charged!! The sales people did not give direct answers or adequately explain all of the charges. The Kayak.com price I agreed on claimed to have included all taxes and fees, but this apparently was not true. Once at the Firefly rental office near the airport in Cancun, Mexico, the agent added fees upon fees and taxes on top of those fees. They also added a "required" liability insurance that cost more than the price of the rental. Since my credit card covered collision insurance, I refused Firefly's heavily overpriced collision insurance. But Firefly required a security deposit of $7000.00 held on my credit card to cover possible damages. (they first wanted a $ 15000.00 credit card deposit.) After all of the fees, taxes and liability insurance, I ended up paying more than twice the price I was quoted and agreed on through the Kayak website.
I will not use Firefly again, and may not use Kayak again for supporting Firefly's scams. When Kayak gives a car rental quote that includes all taxes and fees, that price must be true and cannot change, as it did with Firefly, when the customer arrives in a foreign country to pick up the car. Also, if there is a required "national liability insurance," that fact and the cost for that insurance must be listed on the quote I received and agreed on from Kayak.
Avoid Firefly car rental. They are dishonest and unprofessional.
Don’t use this car service in Cancun You foolPositiv: My mistake was to believe everybody I spoke withNegativ: I use hertz what a fool
Never got the carNegativ: Location was a small stall in downtown. I was an hour late in reaching and the guy told me that we didn't save your car for you. Only thing available now are expensive cars which are $300 per day. My 4 day rental was $150 total.
Positiv: pick up was easy and straightforward, care was in good-condition
it was expensive, but we had done research before and new extra charges were coming Negativ: drop-off was slow with a long line; stressful when trying to make a plane!
Positiv: The car was greatNegativ: The guys giving u the car and checking it, taking pictures, was asking for tip, saying they're not being paid by Hertz, they only work for tip.. how true is this???
Negativ: Surprised me with a mandatory insurance policy that more than doubled the price of the rental.
Negativ: Many extra costs, more than $150 above quote
poorNegativ: the price didnt include insurance and was 3 times more
b--------t companyPositiv: nothing about this company is honest the lie about ratesNegativ: This company as no ethics advertise rates on web different from reality
Insurance & Tax Rip OffPositiv: Car was OK, Nissan Versa w/ 63000 miles. I made them take photos of the many small dings so I didn't get dinged. Tires were shot, so highway travel was bumpy. But car was clean and a/c worked.
When I arrived they said they "overbooked" and only had premium cars left, and that I would have to pay $30 more per day or wait until someone returned a regular car which could be who knows how long and that I would be behind others. Eventually they backed down.Negativ: Prepaid on TripAdvisor but then they added local insurance coverage. Said they would rent without it. So I had no choice. Then at checkout they added another $48 as tax on the insurance. So an extra $142 was padded to the weekly rental. Whatever you paid expect them to find a way to separate you from your wallet
Positiv: They informed me my reservation will not be valid because its a busy time of the year. And they cannot give me a car for the price i reserved it for.
Car "wasn't available," extorted for an upgradePositiv: Car itself was okayNegativ: I arrived at the counter in Cancun with my pre-paid reservation and confirmation number. Immediately I was told that there was nothing in my class available and that I would need to pay for an upgrade at an additional $1,200 USD.
After I refused and asked for a refund for my reservation, they came down to $1000 upgrade for the same car. This was happening to everyone at this hertz location. After i refused the upgrade again, I was told I could rent a car in the original class i reserved for an additional $60/day ($360 on top of my original $230 price I reserved.) I thought they didn't have any cars in my class...?
Being that at this point there were no other options, I was forced to take the deal even though I knew I was being scammed. I'm never one to write poor reviews but I think hertz should know what is going on at their location at Cancun international airport.
Positiv: service was goodNegativ: Ended up payin 3 times more than the reservation
Horrible experience Negativ: Our flight was delayed and they cancelled our reservation. Agent at the counter offered an alternative with another company (something nded like something under the table) for five times the cost of my original reservation. In the end we were left without a car.
Perfect and easy Positiv: Even though I reluctantly paid for the extra insurance despite having coverage through the credit card, the whole experience was easy and pleasant and I can't really complain. Everyone we dealt with was exceptional.
Get ready for hidden feesPositiv: Easy shuttle to the car rental. Good car Negativ: You are forced into hidden fees. The rental price does not include mandatory insurance. Expect to pay 4x what you book. Checking the car back in was also a little bit of a mess.
Ran out of car seatsPositiv: Price looked good onlineNegativ: We arrived early in the morning only to find they were new car seats. What do you do in a foreign country with a two and four-year-old without a car seat? This place sucks.
Dishonest Staff National Positiv: nothing positive Negativ: 1.I reserved, via Kayak.com, an “intermediate SUV or similar” for six (6) days in Cancun, Mexico for $110.08. the reservation said that it included “all taxes and fee”.
2.When I arrive I was told I had to purchase 3rd party insurance for 50 dollar a day. When I questioned the teller I determined that the legal minimum was really $26.00 per day (6*26+ 18% tax=$184.08. This more than doubled by initial reservation price. My new expected total is $294.08, wait it gets better.
3.The first SUV they checked out did not have a working seat beat. The second car they tried to put us in would not start at all. Finally the 3rd vehicle, a minivan, had working seatbelts and would start. The AC was struggling but we had to get going so we accepted it. I took pictures of the first two vehicles but by the 3rd van I was tired and forgot to take picture with my phone for later reference/proof; this will be important later. This process took 2 hours to pickup our “SUV”. This wasted daylight as I had to drive 5 hours to Merida that afternoon.
4.For Six (6) days the van was mediocre adequate for our needs.
5.I return the vehicle with a full tank of gas; I take a video of the exterior and Interior. The attendant filled out the damage assessment as “all good” but missing the front license plate. He stated that it was a $50 US dollar charge. I didn’t have picture showing the plate there or not; so I signed the report stating such. I was willing to eat a 50 dollar charge.
6.I was not given a copy of the report showing “no damage”
7.I was not given a final bill.
8.They said that everything was fine and I would receive an email with the bill later. I never did.
9.My credit card was billed $606.08 vs Kayak reservation price of $110.08.
10.I am currently working with my credit card, Discover, who are doing an awesome job disputing this fraudulent bill. I also called National US customer service and was able to determine the extra charge was from a $300 (5000 Pesos) charge due to "damage". Remember I was told everything was good, no damage. Right dishonest staff.
My advice is to search online to read the reviews prior to renting in Cancun. National is one of the worst. Taxis and Uber appear to be the way to go to avoid the bait and switch.
Know about renting in mexicoPositiv: National was great! The sales rep was really nice and honest which is rare for a car rental place. Negativ: Realize in Mexico you have to get insurance which adds to your rate. Actually US insurance companies often don't cover cars in Mexico so it's best to get full coverage. Adds like 30 per day.
All good, except for dropoffPositiv: Pickup was efficient, car was great.Negativ: Delay at dropoff because they couldn't find my credit card. It took awhile but the staff person was helpful.
BRING PROOF OF THIRD PARTY LIABILITY COVERAGEPositiv: Staff was friendly. Negativ: You must bring proof of third party liability coverage if you do not wish to purchase any insurance. Our 9 day rental was to cost US$46.18 through priceline. Since we did not bring proof of third party liability, we paid over US$280. This should be listed under 'important information' in the booking itinerary. Not cool.
The price was 300% more than the online pricePositiv: Everyone was nice, the car was perfectly clean.Negativ: I will never rent from National ever again. The price of the insurance (they made us buy it, saying that we HAD to take the minimum insurance by law) made the total price for 10 days to go from $195 to $650! We did not really need a car for our vacation, but I thought that for $200 I would not have to get a cab and we could do some site seeing. Next time I will just catch a cab.
Cancelled my reservationNegativ: I arrived later than the time that I had booked the car for and they had given it away and had no alternatives. I had to go elsewhere and pay a lot more. My fault maybe, but they should be clearer about the policy.
Waited 2 hours for shuttle and paid 50% more than Positiv: Car was clean, and drop off was easy. Negativ: Waited 2 hours at the Cancun airport for the National Shuttle to arrive. Guy kept saying it should be here any minute. We could have walked there and back 10 times if he would have told us where it was.
When we finally got to the rental car office, they told us our quote did not include insurance that was mandatory. Even though all other rental car companies did include this in their quote.
Then, tried to give us a lower level car than what we booked for the same price. I was at least able to pull up the confirmation email to show the car level I had booked.
After all of this, we ended up losing 4 hours of our vacation and paying 50% more that expected. Totally going with Hertz next time. Saw shuttles every 5 minutes, and quoted us a lower price at the airport and assured it was with the mandatory insurance.
typical rentalPositiv: easy Negativ: not specific to National but all the hidden "liability" clauses are a pain.
payless sucksPositiv: they cancelled the reservation at the last minute.
Positiv: It had 4 wheels and fit our family of 4 and bags. Nice red color and air conditioning worked. Negativ: Radio didn't work, Car was banged up everywhere, automatic nothing including windows, mid size car was actually only for 4 passengers. Car had over 90k miles on it. Paid at least twice the quoted amount after fees and insurance.
SchmeservationPositiv: It had 4 wheels. Negativ: We reserved a 12 passenger van. They didn't have this and had to give us 2 separate vehicles and promised us they would bring us the van in the next 2 days. This didn't happen and we had to make contact again and FINALLY got the van we had reserved. Kayak quoted us $250 and the actual price was $680.
I will never rent from Payless againNegativ: The man who rented to us at the Tulum outlet (Elias) was extremely rude and condescending. I never complain but this was beyond anything I had experienced before. The car we were given did not start after two days and we had to take it back. Elias was not there when we switched cars but we were told to see him for a refund on all of the gas we had put in the car that was no longer starting. The night we dropped off the car that wouldn't start, the man working there couldn't even move the car because the starter was so dead. Elias said there was nothing wrong with the car and then said "this kind of thing always happens with people like you". He said we were lying about the car and although he eventually did, he did not want to reimburse us for the 250 pesos of gas that we were owed.
He was rude and believed that having a string tied to the broken door handle in the car was also acceptable. He is a total crook and we will not be back.
MediocrePositiv: Staff was friendly and made pick up and drop off smoothNegativ: Unclear pricing. Advertisement says nothing about the insurance which is required and costs two orders of magnitude more than the rental
Not Great ServicePositiv: Staff was friendly Negativ: It took nearly two hours to get our reserved car. There were only two people on line in front of me, both of whom also had a reserved car so it was not a matter of long lines or customers with complicated problems. Also they oversell an overly expensive insurance package.
Too expensivePositiv: People was kind. Negativ: Too expensive for a small car. Price was viven when I was in the place. I asked around and there are better rent a car options. Never rent with payless again.
Strongly recommend that you do not use Payless as Positiv: There was a person at the airport counter Negativ: So many problems. They are 3 miles from the airport which makes a difference when they overcharge by 4+ times the price i signed up for. When I told him my Amex platinum covers the extra cost for insurance he told me to find another company (3 miles back & hour wasted). I asked him to charge me in pesos he said no. Their exchange rate over 10% the going rate. Even then total was 28 pesos higher. When I told him he was going to give me a return credit I told him don't bother Key fob didn't work and when I brought it to a different payless he wanted me to pay for a new battery (when I got mad he relented). I had to fill gas tank higher than I got it. Was told I could return it anywhere in Cancun but when I did they charged me an extra 250 pesos. There's more but I just want ro say this was the worst rental I have EVER done. Totally unacceptable.
Pricing not truePositiv: Car was goodNegativ: That the insurance part wasn't mentioned at time of purchase. The person told us that it would cost us an extra $33 a day because it's against the law to not purchase the Mexican insurance instead of either going without or using our own. Original price was $116, the price changed from $465 with a $300 deposit to $385/$300 deposit when we were ready to walk out the door
Insurance coverage hustleNegativ:
Just as most of the reviews describe, there was an attempt to hustle me into overpaying for a comprehensive insurance policy. After heading for the door, they decided to drop the price of it somewhat.
The best thing to do is make reservations with a few different companies, so if they jerk you around you can simply walk to the next company and do business.
Oldest car I have ever rented.Positiv: Car had over 120K, smelled like cigarettes and seats were badly worn out. I had a lot of tire issues along the way, possibly because they were very old. This is my last time renting from Payless
Phantom DamagePositiv: The car was new and clean.Negativ: The people at the rental place claimed I put a tiny scratch on the car. The car was new but the initial inspection was at night and not thorough so there was no proof that I was responsible for the "damage." The "damage" was a speck on the fender the size of a grain of sand. They attempted to point to another mark on the car that i rubbed off easily with my finger. It was bird feces. They charged me 40 dollars.
I also spent much more on the rental than I was initially quoted.
Fraudulent price scamsNegativ: I was very upset that Kayak advertised the rental as being $8. We reserved the car at this price, and arrived in Cancun to be surprised with a whopping amount of insurance fees which amounted to over $400. If we refused the insurance and used our credit card's insurance for the car, then we had to pay $1300.00 to the rental car company, which obviously made no sense. Absolutely infuriating to be surprised with this tremendous rate differencce, and found ourselves in a position of helplessness last minute. Would never rent again here.
Simple and easyPositiv: They communicated clearly via email before we arrived. The rental was inexpensive. I used my Amex card for insurance and there was no pressure to buy more insurance. They simply placed the $2500 hold on my card. The car ran fine and we had a great trip! We took lots of pictures when we picked the car up and had no problems with the drop off.
Negativ: Basically forced us to take the additional insurance at $45 per day. If declined they wanted a $3000 deposit on the car.
Never had that experience elsewhere
Positiv: Quality of the carsNegativ: Time for waiting to be attended at the pickup/returns area.
The price structure for the insurance where you have to leave 2000 on deposit on the car
You need to read the fine print.Positiv: The price if it would have been the price I expected.Negativ: Once I arrived at Thrifty, the price for the car was accurate, but you are required to have insurance on the rental and that raise the price another $30 per day. This was not in the reservation I saw on Kayak, or at least not that I could see. I ended up cancelling the reservation and going a different route.
LiePositiv: NothingNegativ: Lie, prices not as described
ClosedPositiv: Nothing! the location was closed, and I was left hanging looking for another car company.Negativ: The location was closed, I had to get Eurocar to rent me at a higher price and back of the line...
Price was real.Positiv: I paid 85 cents a day. I did leave a $2000 visa security deposit for insurance but i was refunded all of it back and only paid 168 pesos total for 7 days of rental...this was including tax.
Price is in the insurancePositiv: Good serviceNegativ: Rates online overly reasonable but the entire price of the car was in the insurance. Even the lowest level, just liability was over 3x the daily rental fee. Not a fun surprise.
Negativ: Unprofessional service.
Overcharging the clients including unnecessary insPositiv: NothingNegativ: The way they trick clients to buy more expensive insurance.
Not as cheap as you think Negativ: It seems like a great deal... until you get there and have to pay hundreds of dollars in insurance! Unless you have a credit card that has a rental car insurance deal, beware you'll be spending 200-400 in insurance.
