MisleadingPositiv: The ease of making the reservation and explanation of charges.Negativ: When it finally came to completing the reservation and receiving the car, the representative informs me that I cannot pick up the car because I am under 25 years old. I ask her where it says that as it was not disclosed, and she turns her screen to show me in large letters to not rent to me because I am under 25. I then ask her if that applies only the rental I had made or if I'm unable to rent any car with Alamo, and she confirmed that I am unable to rent any car with them. I asked her to cancel the reservation, retrieved my ID from her and she apologized. What was the point? Why was that not disclosed during the rental process at Kayak? That should be a filter - does not rent to under 25, does rent but assesses a fee - in order to know for sure when making reservations in advance and during busy times like New Years. Needless to say, that was the last time I use Kayak.

AVIS is Running a Scam w/ Fuel OptionNegativ: The AVIS rental counter associate would not allow me to remove the fuel option when renting the car. When I returned with the car full of fuel, I had to go to the rental counter again to remove the fuel charge. This is essentially a scam, because AVIS knows that a certain percentage of customer are going to be pressed for time to catch their airplane and won't go to the rental counter to remove the fuel charge. So even though a customer fill the tank of gas upon returning the vehicle, AVIS will still charge them as if they returned the car empty.

Negativ: Drop off location was wrong on my paperwork from avis. After driving around looking for a place that didn't exist I called avis and directed me to drop the car at another location, and then bring keys to another location. Was going to be late after this as we had to walk to the key drop off. Asked them to wait as we'd be 10 minutes late. They said no problem. No one there to accept keys. Called the national number and was told I have to now walk back to the car and take it to another location. Couldn't do that, already late for a flight. Avis pretty much said tough luck. I asked if I could lock the keys in the glove box because I had to get going. Avis said no and that I would be charged additional fees. Whatever. It's just money, but avis customer service is an abomination.

Slammed with feesNegativ: Our return flight from Chicago to Atlanta was changed due to Hurricane Irma. We needed to keep the rental car for an additional 12 hours beyond our original reservation. AVIS doubled our rate for the entire rental period. This was terrible price gouging that is not acceptable. I will never rent from them again!

The car that wasn't thereNegativ: "Reserved" online. It was not made clear that the company was offsite or that a credit card number was necessary to hold the car. Our flight arrived nearly 2 hours late. We took the shuttle to the rental counter only to realize Economy was in a different location. Called both the local number and the toll-free number and got no answer. By the time my phone calls caught up with me it was 12:30 am and the message was that they would hold the car until 10:00. So now we were stuck at Midway. Luckily we were able to rent anothe car but had to cram 6 adults with luggage into 1 car instead of 2 and had to pay a premium price. I would not use Economy again.
Positiv: The employees of the company are friendly and helpful. The car was new and comfortable. Negativ: The company has a hidden "mandatory" roadside assistance fee of $100. It is NOT printed on any of the paperwork, nor or is there a notification when making the reservation on Kayak. It doubled the price of my rental, but there was 0 communication upfont. I reserve thru Kayak all the time and expect they would be disappointed in the hidden costs as well.

At drop off @ ORD could not give me any reason for the level of service I received nor did she seem like there was going to be any follow up with her management to see what could have been done.

Hertz O’Hare is a disasterNegativ: Pick up was endless even though I am a premier member. Drop off was worse. On a -5F degrees I had to wait outside for 30min for a transport to the terminal. Reason given—shift change. Unacceptable at one of the world’s largest airports. The taxes and fees (before insurance which I did not need) DOUBLED the cost of the rental. Oh, and bald tires. Great in snow......not.

Positiv: Never AGAIN!Negativ: NEVER AGAIN! This was booked less than a week before for car to be picked up on the Wed eve of Thanksgiving. They failed to disclose that they were not located with the other rental car companies at the airport, and that you have to take a 2nd shuttle that you call for to get to their lot. I started calling at 4:30pm and after 30 minutes of calling with no answer (once someone answered and hung up the phone), I took a cab to their lot only to find they were closed!!!! Took cab back to the airport and rented from Alamo, and the charge ended up being $110 less then Payless for the 3 day rental.

Heads up for Midway, you need to take 2 different shuttles to rentalPositiv: The price was affordable...staff was pleasant. Car was clean. Negativ: They don't tell you that you have to take a second shuttle from the first shuttle at Midway. The pick up office is so tiny, my luggage had to be brought in each piece at a time, since it wouldn't fit through the doorway. Only 2 people could wait in the office, it was so small. The parking lot does not have a drive to drop off car, so you just park it anywhere. No one tells you to write down your own mileage and bring it to the desk.

Finally got car -- not the cleanest but we just wanted to go by then. Realized the odor we smelled was smoke. Yuk. Next day we found French fry holders, a plastic cup and food wrappers under passenger seat. Washed rear window while getting gas only to discover the grime was on the inside. Also, no mention of GPS, toll tag, extras, etc while checking out car. Would have been nice to know about some of that stuff, especially due to toll roads around Chicago. The drop off wasn't much better than pick up. One agent, packed small office. All in all you are getting what you pay for. Decent car, bare bones customer service. Be prepared to be underwhelmed.
A dirty car with a bad tirePositiv: First car was very dirty, and while I was driving the front left tire blew out. When I traded it for another car, the service rep. told me it had had a slow leak prior. They should NOT have given it to me! The replacement car was newer, cleaner, and nicer. But the hassle (and potential danger) was upsetting.Negativ: I think I already explained, above. I will give credit to the very helpful representative at the O'hare location, who helped me replace the bad car from the Midway location.

It would have been nice to receive a heads up, as 55th street is a good distance from 47th street. I do, also, wonder why the taxes and fees inflate the cost of rental, to twice the price that was quoted!

Better bring $500 w/youThey wanted a deposit Negativ: They wanted a deposit of $500 despite the credit card hold and payment.
Negativ: The rude and unhelpful clerk lost my contract and would not let me leave until he found it and i signed it. The shuttle then left and I was forced to wait for the next one and sit until they filled it. If I had the 40 minutes that was wasted at the office I would not have missed my flight.

Weird driver policies, charged despite saying I'd get full refundNegativ: Routes car rentals does not allow locals to rent their cars, which is a bizarre and discriminatory policy. This is also the kind of thing that should be made very clear before you make the reservation, but it wasn't. I had to cancel last minute and find another way to travel the day before Thanksgiving. I was told I'd be given a full refund. Later I noticed a $20 charge from the rental company, and when I called to ask about it, I was kept on hold for 20 minutes. I got angry and hung up and this is still unresolved.

When we called to inform Routes, they told us they were aware of the issue—then why are they still renting the car? At the very least, why weren’t we informed? Shuttle driver was a very aggressive driver and the radio was blaring.

At the airport, the shuttle back to the airport is a bit slow arriving. There may be a need to have an extra driver for that.

Many problemsNegativ: Thrifty at O'Hare has a separate hidden entrance and no signage at the main rental car entrance, so we spent an extra half hour trying to find them before our flight.
Kept us waiting on pickup, since the car we reserved was "in the back and blocked by other cars." They charged an additional $50 to add another driver, which seems unnecessary.
Good-like experience Positiv: Pleasant human experience from people who were not front desk. Negativ: Extra fees on top of what Kayak said it would be (some gas tax, she said). Calling smallest model of SUV available on the market a "medium size". Front desk people were not courteous.

Positiv: car was new, clean, nice to drive. Easy, quick dropoff. Negativ: Pickup took an inordinately long time. Too few attendants for too many customers. Simple thing that can be easily forecast from expected pickup times, and dealt with ahead of time. Once I got to the counter, the attendant was downright fabulous. She was totally unfazed by the relentless pressure of the endless stream of customers. Shout-out to her!!!
