Great Customer ServicePositiv: I had picked "Drive Happy Deal" not knowing that it could be any size car at the time of pickup. When I went to pickup my car, the only choice I had it was a mini-van. I like to drive smaller cars. After I left the lot, the manager called me and arranged a small car for me to be picked up the next day. The manager was extremely helpful and friendly.

Apparently the ENTIRE Alamo operation shuts down around this time and does not come back online for several hours.. I was only 1 of several families STRANDED.. During the busiest time of year.. Alamo would not answer phones.. They do not care about their customers.. I will NEVER rent from them again..

Filed a claim on mePositiv: Friendly lady. In and out of there is a heatrbeat. Negativ: A month and two days after my drop off, I received a call from Viking Billing Services notifying me that a claim was filed on the rental for damage totaling over 700 dollars. I drove the car straight from Bend to Portland and returned it in the exact same condition as it was given to me. Either the did not read the previous damage report or they caused damage after I dropped off the car and tried to bill me for it. The friendly woman who checked the car in gave me a receipt standing right next to the car and had no damage to note. The claim, as of now, has been dropped, but only after over an hour and 5 phone calls.

Outstanding service; outstanding valuePositiv: I have never been treated so well by a rental car company in all my life. We were taken care of right away. An agent walked us down the aisles, and helped us choose a care which he then went over with us bumper to bumper. We also loved the car we got. It was new, it was clean, and it was easy to understand. The vehicle performed admirable, and really made an impression on us. Then, when we dropped the car off, an agent was right there, and took care of us right away. This was the easiest, most well-handled rental I have ever done anywhere, and the price was GREAT! Negativ: I cannot think of anything about this vehicle, this company, or this experience that I did not like. I will definitely be recommending them to friends, especially friends renting out of Portland.
Pickup nightmarePositiv: Following the fiasco at the downtown pickup store, (they ran out of cars and had 5 people waiting for cars) the lady in charge shuttled clients to another store about a mile away where there was a lot full of cars. then gave us our choice of cars and told us not to worry about gas, bring it back empty.. good customer relationsNegativ: that we waited one hour for a car, and finally resolved the issue that should have been an option from the beginning. They had another store with plenty of cars, they should have started shuttling people immediately when they ran out of cars.
Got the best upgrade.Positiv: We arranged for an in town vehicle pick up taking Uber to get there and saved 60%. When we arrived we found our fuel efficient car had been given away. Since we planned to drive 3000 miles, this was disappointing but the agent offered us a Chevy Suburban Premier at the same price! This didn't particularly thrill us but oh, the comfort. Throughout the entire trip we averaged 23 mpg. That was much better than the 8 mpg I expected and the comfort more than made up for the fuel cost.Negativ: The car was given to us dirty. We didn't have much choice but we still made them vacuum it out. We later took it to a full service car wash and got it cleaned.
Negativ: They seemed very busy, we waited about an hour for our car to be washed and prepped. When I originally made the reservation I was told that we would be reimbursed for the cost to get from the airport to your off site area, but was told no at the office.
Positiv: Customer service was very good. The car we used was trouble free the whole week.
Negativ: I had input an airport address but when I went to get it it was a downtown location.
Easy rental but price inaccuratePositiv: Clean car, easy location via MAX lightrail. Staff generally friendly. Negativ: Staff didn't fully communicate the fuel charges like $9.99/gallon + tax if they fill it for you after you return! Also the rate I booked online was different than what they charged me so transparency is helpful with these third-party bookings.

Friendly, helpful staff.Negativ: It was "Eclipse weekend" and the car hadn't been cleaned but they were swamped with car rentals that weekend so it was understandable. Got a squeege at a gas station and cleaned it up in about 5 min.

Horrible experience!Negativ: Thought I got a rental at PDX airport. It must've automatically bumped me to the nearest location so we went to the location, it was a hotel, nobody was working... and then had to uber to the next location. And almost missed the pick up due to traffic and the place closing at 6pm. Most stressful rental car experience I've ever had.

Price-gouging branch managerPositiv: I have no problem with the car I rented. Negativ: I didn't like the fact that I completely missed the event I had come from Florida to Oregon to attend because 1. I thought my paid-for rental car was at PDX. (It was at a Hertz #5 downtown branch.) 2. I waited in line for almost an hour at the Hertz office at the airport before I was told to go downtown 3. I then called Hertz #5, told them I would be late and took the train downtown as instructed. 4. 20 stops later I got off the train and walked to the downtown office 5. After I got there I had to wait for 2 1/2 hours to get a car 6. Meanwhile the branch manager was hawking car rentals for $350/day to people coming in off the street. I'm 72 yrs. old and this was very difficult for me.

Unreliable and disorganizedPositiv: The car was nice. Good size for what I needed it for. Negativ: The day before my scheduled pick up I was called by the Hertz location informing me that they had a shortage of cars, and that hey were pretty sure that they would not have a vehicle available for me. I made this reservation and prepaid in full in February. I informed them that I had made the reservation to be able to transport my mother to and from her chemotherapy appointment at the hospital that afternoon, and that it was very important that I have a vehicle. They apologized and told me that there was nothing that they could do. They also recommended that I call when I landed in Portland to see if a vehicle was available, but again he told me he didn't see that happening. I asked about getting a refund so that I could rent from another place, and was told that they were unable to do that because I booked through a third party site, and that any refund would need to be taken care of through them
When I landed there was not a car available. I had to take a cab to the hospital to see my mother, who made other arrangements to get to her appointment. They didn't have a car for me until 8 hours later. They didn't call me to tell me the car was available. I had to call them to find out.
Went to the establishment, had a wait of 20 minutes. Was charged for taxes. Asked about getting a discount on my rental and they told me since I had prepaid in full they were unable to do anything for me.
The windshield on the vehicle was filthy. They sent someone out to clean it. They did a really crappy job, and I had to take it to a gas station to clean the windshield. There was also less than 1/4 tank of gas in it, so had to fill up right after picking up the car.
When I went to return the car, it was another 15 minute wait. This was a terrible experience. I have never had so many complications with a service that I prepaid 6 months in advance for.

Positiv: Car was fine.Negativ: I paid for insurance through Kayak and was notified when picking up the car that that didn't really cover anything and ended up paying an additional $175 for insurance through Hertz, a bit of the bait and switch if you ask me and both Hertz and Kayak are at fault. I had scheduled to drop off at night and wasn't provided with any instructions, luckily the valet from across the street let me know what to do (apparently he lets renters know what to do pretty often since Hertz can't be bothered).

Good rental agencyPositiv: I liked how quick it was to be processed and given a car, which was in decent condition and had the features I was looking for. I like how easy it was to drop off at the airport. Negativ: It would be better if Payless was located at the airport instead of having to call for a shuttle service.
BasicPositiv: Friendly staff and very good on price. Quick check in process. Negativ: Most rentals at pdx are on site but this is a 15 minute shuttle ride. Also the first car assigned had warning lights on so we had to change cars.
Left luggagePositiv: Great little car. Good service. Great price.Negativ: When I left my bag in the office, they couldn't figure out that the name on my bag was the same as my reservation and that I had given them my cell number. Because of that, I was almost an hour away before I realized I had left my bag. So my one hour trip ended up being a three hour trip. A quick call when they found my bag would have saved me a bunch of time and the headache of commuter traffic I then caught in two directions.
Wouldn't rent from them againPositiv: Van pickup was quick. About a 10 minute drive from the airport.Negativ: When I picked up the car, I told them I would be returning it in 15 hours. They NEVER mentioned how I would be charged. Instead I was charged for 2 whole days instead of 1 day plus 3 hours. Also, they put a $200 charge on my Amex the day I rented and that has not been refunded yet either.
Positiv: Nice car, loved not having to take out keys every time.Negativ: That "Payless" was written on the back side window in paint. I don't think it is safe to let everyone know it is a rental car when a woman is by herself in a new city.

Positiv: Car was great, the whole experience was fine. The billing afterward is what wrecked the whole experience for me. Negativ: They charged me for a half tank, though I had filled up right outside the drop off station at the airport. Then working with customer service to receive a refund was a dozen of little hoops. The web portal wouldn't accept my ticket number, was so wasteful of everyone's time. I feel this is standard practice for them, to over charge people and see if they catch it. Total cost was twice what we were originally quoted, all because they messed up. It looks like they will refund, but it shouldn't have been a problem in the first place.

Positiv: The car was a comfortable ride, with great acceleration.Negativ: The exterior was filthy when we got it, and the shifter is downright dangerous in a rental car. It seems to be a radical departure from normal US technology and twice, I thought it was I Park, but was only in Drive. The shifter goes forward and backward, but also side-to-sde. Not a good combination, in and automotive engineer's opinion.

Very convenient and easy to rent from ThriftyPositiv: The shuttle drivers who drove us from the airport to the rental company were so courteous and professional, they drove us to our spot where our rental was parked. Dropping off the car was so easy and convenient, all we had to do was park the car at the same place we picked it up. They printed out a receipt right away and we waited for a shuttle to take us to the airport. I had to tip the shuttle drivers cause they were so nice to us.

Thrifty PortlandPositiv: Good gas mileage Negativ: My experience with Thrifty was very mediocre. When picking up the car the counter staff was excessively pushy about upgrading and added purchases that I stated I do not want. There was left over trash including coffee cups and energy drink bottles in the back seat of the car when we picked it up, which clearly means it was not properly cleaned between renters. The car, however, ran well and there were no issues with that. I thought the price was expensive considering the service we received. When picking up and returning the car the location is off site from the airport and they provide a shuttle to/from but it takes extra time considering there are many rental companies located right at PDX airport.

I had been 'upgraded' to a large SUV, and I had requested a standard SUV. I said the large was too big for me, and I was not comfortable driving that large vehicle, plus it was going to cost me more in gas. So there was some delay while they found me another car that was what I had reserved. Negativ: I was upgraded to large SUV, one that I was not comfortable driving. At first, it seemed there was no other option, but customer service did make some calls and was able to get me the car i requested.
First Thrifty Car Rental experience Positiv: I liked the effort the sales staff gave while we were picking up our car. Because their system was down and had to manually check us in. Thanks to the crew at PDX thrifty.Negativ: What didn't like about Thrifty Car Rental was the car. While at my conference, I was car pooling 3 others from the hotel. Everything was fine except the road noise. Way to loud, felt like I was yelling. I requested a Malibu but was issued a Camry.
